The Shoe in the River

Sunita and her friend Nuno walk in the hills. The day is hot and sunny.

Sunita e o amigo Nuno caminham pelas colinas. O dia está quente e ensolarado.

They come to a small river. It is cold and clear. There is no bridge. Big stones lie in the water.

Eles chegam a um pequeno rio. Ele é frio e cristalino. Não há ponte. Pedras grandes estão na água.

"We can walk on the stones," Nuno says. He goes first, and he gets across.

"Podemos andar sobre as pedras", diz Nuno. Ele vai primeiro e consegue atravessar.

Sunita follows him slowly. The stones are wet. Halfway across, her foot slips.

Sunita o segue devagar. As pedras estão molhadas. No meio da travessia, o pé dela escorrega.

Her left shoe falls into the water. Her sock is wet, too. It floats away down the river.

O sapato esquerdo dela cai na água. A meia dela também fica molhada. O sapato flutua rio abaixo.

"My shoe!" she shouts.

"Meu sapato!", ela grita.

Nuno laughs. Then he sees her face. "Run!" he says.

Nuno ri. Então vê o rosto dela. "Corra!", ele diz.

They run along the bank. The shoe is far ahead. It turns slowly in the water.

Eles correm pela margem. O sapato está bem à frente. Ele gira devagar na água.

Nuno finds a long stick on the ground. "Take this," he says.

Nuno encontra um galho comprido no chão. "Pegue isto", diz ele.

Sunita runs faster. The river turns left. The shoe stops by a big rock. She puts the stick out. She pulls the shoe to the bank.

Sunita corre mais rápido. O rio faz uma curva para a esquerda. O sapato para perto de uma pedra grande. Ela estica o galho. Puxa o sapato até a margem.

"Got it!" she shouts. Nuno claps his hands.

"Peguei!", ela grita. Nuno bate palmas.

She pours the water out of the shoe. It is cold and wet, but she puts it on.

Ela despeja a água do sapato. Ele está frio e molhado, mas ela o calça.

"Next time, I carry my shoes," she says.

"Da próxima vez, eu levo os sapatos na mão", diz ela.
