The Shoe in the River

Sunita and her friend Nuno walk in the hills. The day is hot and sunny.

Sunita dan temannya, Nuno, berjalan di perbukitan. Hari itu panas dan cerah.

They come to a small river. It is cold and clear. There is no bridge. Big stones lie in the water.

Mereka sampai di sebuah sungai kecil. Airnya dingin dan jernih. Tidak ada jembatan. Batu-batu besar berada di dalam air.

"We can walk on the stones," Nuno says. He goes first, and he gets across.

"Kita bisa berjalan di atas batu-batu itu," kata Nuno. Ia menyeberang lebih dulu, dan ia berhasil sampai ke seberang.

Sunita follows him slowly. The stones are wet. Halfway across, her foot slips.

Sunita mengikutinya dengan pelan. Batu-batunya basah. Di tengah sungai, kakinya tergelincir.

Her left shoe falls into the water. Her sock is wet, too. It floats away down the river.

Sepatu kirinya jatuh ke air. Kaus kakinya juga basah. Sepatu itu hanyut ke hilir sungai.

"My shoe!" she shouts.

"Sepatuku!" teriaknya.

Nuno laughs. Then he sees her face. "Run!" he says.

Nuno tertawa. Lalu ia melihat wajah Sunita. "Lari!" katanya.

They run along the bank. The shoe is far ahead. It turns slowly in the water.

Mereka berlari menyusuri tepi sungai. Sepatu itu sudah jauh di depan. Sepatu itu berputar pelan di air.

Nuno finds a long stick on the ground. "Take this," he says.

Nuno menemukan sebatang tongkat panjang di tanah. "Pakai ini," katanya.

Sunita runs faster. The river turns left. The shoe stops by a big rock. She puts the stick out. She pulls the shoe to the bank.

Sunita berlari lebih cepat. Sungai berbelok ke kiri. Sepatu itu berhenti di dekat batu besar. Ia mengulurkan tongkat itu. Ia menarik sepatu itu ke tepi.

"Got it!" she shouts. Nuno claps his hands.

"Dapat!" teriaknya. Nuno bertepuk tangan.

She pours the water out of the shoe. It is cold and wet, but she puts it on.

Ia menuangkan air dari dalam sepatu itu. Sepatunya dingin dan basah, tapi ia memakainya.

"Next time, I carry my shoes," she says.

"Lain kali, aku akan menenteng sepatuku," katanya.
