The Map in Grandpa's Box

Vida found an old box in her grandpa's room. It was brown, and it smelled of dust. She opened it with care.

Vida encontrou uma caixa velha no quarto do avô. Era marrom e cheirava a poeira. Ela a abriu com cuidado.

Inside was a piece of paper. It was a map of the town. Someone drew it by hand with a blue pen.

Dentro havia um pedaço de papel. Era um mapa da cidade. Alguém o desenhara à mão com uma caneta azul.

There was a red X in the park. Vida looked at it for a long time. What was there?

Havia um X vermelho no parque. Vida olhou para ele por um longo tempo. O que havia lá?

She took the map to her grandpa. He sat in his chair and read a book. "Grandpa, look at this," she said.

Ela levou o mapa ao avô. Ele estava sentado na poltrona lendo um livro. "Vovô, olhe isto", disse ela.

He took the map and smiled. "I drew this long ago," he said. "Do you want to go there?"

Ele pegou o mapa e sorriu. "Eu desenhei isto há muito tempo", disse. "Quer ir lá?"

"Yes!" said Vida.

"Quero!", disse Vida.

They left the house and walked to the park. Grandpa walked slowly, and Vida carried the map. She read the lines. "Go to the gate. Then walk past the pond."

Eles saíram de casa e foram a pé até o parque. O vovô andava devagar e Vida levava o mapa. Ela lia as linhas. "Vá até o portão. Depois passe pelo lago."

They walked past the pond and the swings. The red X was on a very big tree.

Eles passaram pelo lago e pelos balanços. O X vermelho estava em uma árvore muito grande.

"Is there a treasure?" Vida asked.

"Tem um tesouro?", perguntou Vida.

"Yes," said Grandpa. "I planted this tree. I was ten years old. It was small then."

"Tem", disse o vovô. "Eu plantei esta árvore. Eu tinha dez anos. Ela era pequena naquela época."

Vida looked up at the tall tree. Its leaves moved in the wind. They sat down together under it. Grandpa opened his bag.

Vida olhou para a árvore alta. As folhas se mexiam ao vento. Eles se sentaram juntos debaixo dela. O vovô abriu a bolsa.
