The Map in Grandpa's Box

Vida found an old box in her grandpa's room. It was brown, and it smelled of dust. She opened it with care.

Vida encontró una caja vieja en el cuarto de su abuelo. Era café y olía a polvo. La abrió con cuidado.

Inside was a piece of paper. It was a map of the town. Someone drew it by hand with a blue pen.

Adentro había un papel. Era un mapa del pueblo. Alguien lo había dibujado a mano con un bolígrafo azul.

There was a red X in the park. Vida looked at it for a long time. What was there?

Había una X roja en el parque. Vida la miró un largo rato. ¿Qué había allí?

She took the map to her grandpa. He sat in his chair and read a book. "Grandpa, look at this," she said.

Llevó el mapa a su abuelo. Él estaba sentado en su sillón, leyendo un libro. «Abuelo, mira esto», dijo.

He took the map and smiled. "I drew this long ago," he said. "Do you want to go there?"

Él tomó el mapa y sonrió. «Dibujé esto hace mucho tiempo», dijo. «¿Quieres ir allá?»

"Yes!" said Vida.

«¡Sí!», dijo Vida.

They left the house and walked to the park. Grandpa walked slowly, and Vida carried the map. She read the lines. "Go to the gate. Then walk past the pond."

Salieron de la casa y caminaron al parque. El abuelo caminaba despacio y Vida llevaba el mapa. Leyó las líneas. «Ve hasta la entrada. Luego camina más allá del estanque».

They walked past the pond and the swings. The red X was on a very big tree.

Pasaron el estanque y los columpios. La X roja estaba en un árbol muy grande.

"Is there a treasure?" Vida asked.

«¿Hay un tesoro?», preguntó Vida.

"Yes," said Grandpa. "I planted this tree. I was ten years old. It was small then."

«Sí», dijo el abuelo. «Yo planté este árbol. Tenía diez años. Entonces era pequeño».

Vida looked up at the tall tree. Its leaves moved in the wind. They sat down together under it. Grandpa opened his bag.

Vida miró hacia el árbol alto. Sus hojas se movían con el viento. Se sentaron juntos bajo él. El abuelo abrió su bolsa.
