The Unexpected Guest

Mateo gets home from work at six o'clock every evening. He cooks a simple dinner and watches the news. Tonight, he puts a pot of rice on the stove. He turns on the television and sits down on the sofa.

मातेओ हर शाम छह बजे काम से घर आता है। वह सादा-सा खाना बनाता है और समाचार देखता है। आज रात उसने चूल्हे पर चावल का एक बर्तन चढ़ाया है। वह टीवी चालू करके सोफ़े पर बैठ जाता है।

The rice starts to boil, and the kitchen smells warm and good. Mateo checks his phone for messages. There are none, so he puts it down again. He thinks about a quiet night alone.

चावल उबलने लगते हैं, और रसोई में अच्छी, गर्माहट भरी ख़ुशबू फैल जाती है। मातेओ अपने फ़ोन में संदेश देखता है। कोई संदेश नहीं है, इसलिए वह उसे फिर रख देता है। वह अकेले बिताई जाने वाली एक शांत रात के बारे में सोचता है।

Then somebody knocks on the door. Mateo doesn't expect anyone tonight. He walks to the door and opens it slowly.

तभी कोई दरवाज़े पर दस्तक देता है। मातेओ को आज रात किसी के आने की उम्मीद नहीं है। वह दरवाज़े तक जाता है और उसे धीरे से खोलता है।

"Quinn? Is that really you?" Mateo says, surprised.

"क्विन? क्या सच में तुम हो?" मातेओ हैरान होकर कहता है।

"Hi, Mateo! I was in town, so I decided to visit," Quinn says, smiling.

"हाय, मातेओ! मैं शहर में थी, तो सोचा मिल आऊँ," क्विन मुस्कुराते हुए कहती है।

Mateo didn't see Quinn for almost three years. They shared an apartment in college. Now Quinn lives in another city and works as a nurse.

मातेओ ने क्विन को लगभग तीन साल से नहीं देखा था। वे कॉलेज में एक ही अपार्टमेंट में रहते थे। अब क्विन दूसरे शहर में रहती है और नर्स का काम करती है।

"Come in, come in! I can't believe you're here," Mateo says.

"अंदर आओ, अंदर आओ! मुझे यक़ीन नहीं हो रहा कि तुम यहाँ हो," मातेओ कहता है।

Quinn steps inside and looks around the small kitchen. "Something smells amazing. Is that rice?"

क्विन अंदर आती है और छोटी-सी रसोई में चारों ओर देखती है। "कुछ बहुत बढ़िया ख़ुशबू आ रही है। क्या यह चावल है?"

"Yes, but there's plenty for two," Mateo says. "Sit down. Tell me everything."

"हाँ, लेकिन दो लोगों के लिए काफ़ी है," मातेओ कहता है। "बैठो। मुझे सब कुछ बताओ।"

They sit at the kitchen table, and Mateo brings out two bowls. Quinn talks about the new job and the new city. Mateo turns off the television. He doesn't need it anymore.

वे रसोई की मेज़ पर बैठते हैं, और मातेओ दो कटोरे लाता है। क्विन अपनी नई नौकरी और नए शहर के बारे में बताती है। मातेओ टीवी बंद कर देता है। अब उसे उसकी ज़रूरत नहीं है।

For an hour, they talk and laugh like old friends. The rice gets cold, but neither of them minds.

एक घंटे तक वे पुराने दोस्तों की तरह बातें और हँसी-मज़ाक करते हैं। चावल ठंडे हो जाते हैं, लेकिन दोनों में से किसी को फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता।

"We should do this more often," Quinn says. She stands up to help with the dishes.

"हमें ऐसा और ज़्यादा करना चाहिए," क्विन कहती है। वह बर्तन धोने में मदद करने के लिए उठ खड़ी होती है।

"Next time, call me first," Mateo says, laughing. "But you can always visit without calling."

"अगली बार पहले मुझे फ़ोन कर लेना," मातेओ हँसते हुए कहता है। "लेकिन तुम बिना फ़ोन किए भी कभी भी आ सकती हो।"
