Mateo gets home from work at six o'clock every evening. He cooks a simple dinner and watches the news. Tonight, he puts a pot of rice on the stove. He turns on the television and sits down on the sofa.
马特奥每天傍晚六点下班回家。他做一顿简单的晚饭，看看新闻。今晚，他在炉子上放了一锅米饭。他打开电视，在沙发上坐下。
The rice starts to boil, and the kitchen smells warm and good. Mateo checks his phone for messages. There are none, so he puts it down again. He thinks about a quiet night alone.
米饭开始沸腾，厨房里飘着温暖好闻的香味。马特奥看了看手机有没有消息。没有，他又把手机放下。他想着一个人安安静静度过的夜晚。
Then somebody knocks on the door. Mateo doesn't expect anyone tonight. He walks to the door and opens it slowly.
这时，有人敲门。今晚马特奥并没有约谁。他走到门口，慢慢打开了门。
"Quinn? Is that really you?" Mateo says, surprised.
“奎因？真的是你吗？”马特奥吃惊地说。
"Hi, Mateo! I was in town, so I decided to visit," Quinn says, smiling.
“嗨，马特奥！我正好来这个城市，就决定来看看你，”奎因笑着说。
Mateo didn't see Quinn for almost three years. They shared an apartment in college. Now Quinn lives in another city and works as a nurse.
马特奥已经将近三年没见到奎因了。他们大学时合租过一间公寓。现在奎因住在另一座城市，当护士。
"Come in, come in! I can't believe you're here," Mateo says.
“快进来，快进来！真不敢相信你来了，”马特奥说。
Quinn steps inside and looks around the small kitchen. "Something smells amazing. Is that rice?"
奎因走进屋里，打量着小小的厨房。“好香啊。是米饭吗？”
"Yes, but there's plenty for two," Mateo says. "Sit down. Tell me everything."
“是啊，不过够两个人吃，”马特奥说，“坐下吧。把你的事都告诉我。”
They sit at the kitchen table, and Mateo brings out two bowls. Quinn talks about the new job and the new city. Mateo turns off the television. He doesn't need it anymore.
他们在厨房的桌边坐下，马特奥端出两只碗。奎因讲起她的新工作和新城市。马特奥关掉了电视。他不再需要它了。
For an hour, they talk and laugh like old friends. The rice gets cold, but neither of them minds.
他们聊了一个小时，像老朋友一样又说又笑。米饭凉了，可是两个人都不在意。
"We should do this more often," Quinn says. She stands up to help with the dishes.
“我们应该多这样聚聚，”奎因说。她站起来，要帮忙洗碗。
"Next time, call me first," Mateo says, laughing. "But you can always visit without calling."
“下次先给我打个电话，”马特奥笑着说，“不过，你随时都可以不打招呼就来。”
