The Unexpected Guest

Mateo gets home from work at six o'clock every evening. He cooks a simple dinner and watches the news. Tonight, he puts a pot of rice on the stove. He turns on the television and sits down on the sofa.

Mateo llega a casa del trabajo a las seis de la tarde todos los días. Cocina una cena sencilla y ve las noticias. Esta noche, pone una olla de arroz en la estufa. Enciende el televisor y se sienta en el sofá.

The rice starts to boil, and the kitchen smells warm and good. Mateo checks his phone for messages. There are none, so he puts it down again. He thinks about a quiet night alone.

El arroz empieza a hervir, y la cocina huele cálida y agradable. Mateo revisa su teléfono por si tiene mensajes. No hay ninguno, así que lo deja de nuevo. Piensa en una noche tranquila y solo.

Then somebody knocks on the door. Mateo doesn't expect anyone tonight. He walks to the door and opens it slowly.

Entonces alguien toca a la puerta. Mateo no espera a nadie esta noche. Camina hacia la puerta y la abre despacio.

"Quinn? Is that really you?" Mateo says, surprised.

«¿Quinn? ¿En serio eres tú?», dice Mateo, sorprendido.

"Hi, Mateo! I was in town, so I decided to visit," Quinn says, smiling.

«¡Hola, Mateo! Estaba de paso por la ciudad, así que decidí visitarte», dice Quinn, sonriendo.

Mateo didn't see Quinn for almost three years. They shared an apartment in college. Now Quinn lives in another city and works as a nurse.

Mateo no había visto a Quinn en casi tres años. Compartían un apartamento en la universidad. Ahora Quinn vive en otra ciudad y trabaja como enfermera.

"Come in, come in! I can't believe you're here," Mateo says.

«¡Pasa, pasa! No puedo creer que estés aquí», dice Mateo.

Quinn steps inside and looks around the small kitchen. "Something smells amazing. Is that rice?"

Quinn entra y mira alrededor de la pequeña cocina. «Huele increíble. ¿Eso es arroz?».

"Yes, but there's plenty for two," Mateo says. "Sit down. Tell me everything."

«Sí, pero hay suficiente para dos», dice Mateo. «Sientate. Cuéntame todo».

They sit at the kitchen table, and Mateo brings out two bowls. Quinn talks about the new job and the new city. Mateo turns off the television. He doesn't need it anymore.

Se sientan a la mesa de la cocina, y Mateo saca dos tazones. Quinn habla sobre el nuevo trabajo y la nueva ciudad. Mateo apaga el televisor. Ya no lo necesita.

For an hour, they talk and laugh like old friends. The rice gets cold, but neither of them minds.

Durante una hora, hablan y ríen como viejos amigos. El arroz se enfría, pero a ninguno de los dos le importa.

"We should do this more often," Quinn says. She stands up to help with the dishes.

«Deberíamos hacer esto más seguido», dice Quinn. Se levanta para ayudar con los platos.

"Next time, call me first," Mateo says, laughing. "But you can always visit without calling."

«La próxima vez, avísame primero», dice Mateo, riendo. «Pero siempre puedes visitarme sin avisar».
