The Pen Pal Arrival

Keiko and Yusuf have written letters to each other for exactly two years. It started as a class project between their two schools, one in Japan and one abroad. Neither of them expected it to turn into something so important. Over time, their letters grew longer. They covered favorite foods, worries about exams, and small jokes only the two of them understood.

केइको और यूसुफ़ ठीक दो साल से एक-दूसरे को चिट्ठियाँ लिख रहे हैं। यह उनके दो स्कूलों के बीच एक क्लास प्रोजेक्ट के रूप में शुरू हुआ था, एक स्कूल जापान में और दूसरा विदेश में। दोनों में से किसी ने नहीं सोचा था कि यह इतनी अहम चीज़ बन जाएगी। समय के साथ उनकी चिट्ठियाँ लंबी होती गईं। उनमें पसंदीदा खाने, परीक्षाओं की चिंताएँ और ऐसे छोटे-छोटे मज़ाक होते थे जो सिर्फ़ उन दोनों को समझ आते थे।

Today, Yusuf's exchange program finally brings him to Keiko's city for a full semester. Keiko waits at the arrivals gate, holding a small handwritten sign with his name on it. Her hands feel colder than the airport actually is. She has practiced what to say a dozen times on the train ride over. Now every word has disappeared from her head.

आज यूसुफ़ का एक्सचेंज प्रोग्राम आख़िरकार उसे पूरे एक सेमेस्टर के लिए केइको के शहर ले आया है। केइको आगमन गेट पर खड़ी है, हाथ में उसके नाम वाली एक छोटी हाथ से लिखी तख़्ती है। उसके हाथ हवाई अड्डे की असली ठंड से भी ज़्यादा ठंडे लग रहे हैं। यहाँ आते समय ट्रेन में उसने दर्जनों बार रिहर्सल की थी कि क्या कहना है। अब उसके दिमाग़ से हर शब्द ग़ायब हो गया है।

When Yusuf walks through the doors, he looks exactly like his photos, though somehow taller than she imagined. For a second, neither of them says anything. Two years of letters suddenly feel strange next to an actual, real person. Around them, other families hug and call out names, but Keiko and Yusuf just stand there, smiling awkwardly.

जब यूसुफ़ दरवाज़ों से बाहर आता है, तो वह बिल्कुल अपनी तस्वीरों जैसा दिखता है, हालाँकि केइको की कल्पना से किसी तरह ज़्यादा लंबा। एक पल के लिए दोनों में से कोई कुछ नहीं कहता। दो साल की चिट्ठियाँ अचानक एक असली, सामने खड़े इंसान के आगे अजीब लगने लगती हैं। उनके चारों ओर दूसरे परिवार गले मिल रहे हैं और नाम पुकार रहे हैं, पर केइको और यूसुफ़ बस वहीं खड़े झेंपी हुई मुस्कान के साथ देख रहे हैं।

"I brought something," Yusuf says finally, pulling a small notebook from his bag. It's full of every letter Keiko has ever sent him, printed and kept together. Keiko laughs, surprised, and admits she has saved every one of his too. She keeps them in a box under her bed.

"मैं कुछ लाया हूँ," यूसुफ़ आख़िरकार कहता है और अपने बैग से एक छोटी नोटबुक निकालता है। उसमें केइको की भेजी हर चिट्ठी छपी हुई और एक साथ सँभालकर रखी है। केइको हैरान होकर हँस पड़ती है और मानती है कि उसने भी उसकी हर चिट्ठी सँभालकर रखी है। वह उन्हें अपने पलंग के नीचे एक डिब्बे में रखती है।

They walk out of the airport together, talking faster than either letter ever allowed. If the semester goes well, Yusuf might apply to study here again next year. For now, though, they just have three months. Neither of them plans to waste a single week of it. Keiko already has a list of places she wants to show him.

वे साथ-साथ हवाई अड्डे से बाहर निकलते हैं, उन दोनों की चिट्ठियों में जितनी रफ़्तार से बात हो सकती थी, उससे कहीं तेज़ बोलते हुए। अगर सेमेस्टर अच्छा गया, तो यूसुफ़ अगले साल फिर यहाँ पढ़ने के लिए आवेदन कर सकता है। फ़िलहाल उनके पास बस तीन महीने हैं। दोनों में से कोई भी इसका एक हफ़्ता भी बर्बाद करने का इरादा नहीं रखता। केइको के पास उसे दिखाने के लिए जगहों की सूची पहले से तैयार है।
