The Long Way Around

Ursula and Wendell drove down the coast road on vacation. Heavy rain fell all night before their trip.

Ursula y Wendell manejaban por la carretera costera durante sus vacaciones. Había llovido mucho toda la noche antes de su viaje.

A police officer stood at a barrier ahead. "The road is closed past this point," he said. "Water covers the road near the bridge," he explained.

Un oficial de policía estaba parado junto a una barrera más adelante. «El camino está cerrado a partir de aquí», dijo. «El agua cubre el camino cerca del puente», explicó.

"Is there another road?" Ursula asked.

«¿Hay otro camino?», preguntó Ursula.

"Yes, but it takes an extra hour," the officer said.

«Sí, pero toma una hora más», dijo el oficial.

Wendell looked at the map on his phone. "Let's try it. We are in no rush," he said.

Wendell miró el mapa en su celular. «Intentemos por ahí. No tenemos prisa», dijo.

They turned the car around and followed the officer's directions. The new road went through small quiet towns.

Dieron la vuelta con el auto y siguieron las indicaciones del oficial. El nuevo camino pasaba por pueblos pequeños y tranquilos.

They passed farms, fields, and a row of old barns. Wendell rolled down his window and smelled the wet grass.

Pasaron por granjas, campos y una fila de graneros viejos. Wendell bajó la ventana y sintió el olor del pasto mojado.

Ursula pointed out a rainbow over the hills. "Look at that," she said, and slowed the car.

Ursula señaló un arcoíris sobre las colinas. «Mira eso», dijo, y bajó la velocidad del auto.

They stopped for a few minutes to take a picture. The detour road joined the highway near the coast again.

Se detuvieron unos minutos para tomar una foto. El camino del desvío se unió otra vez a la carretera cerca de la costa.

They reached the beach house just after sunset. They laughed about the long detour over dinner.
