The Ice Skating Lesson

Arin skates twice a week. Today she takes her little cousin to the ice rink. It is his first time. He is seven years old and very small.

Arin patina dos veces por semana. Hoy lleva a su primito a la pista de hielo. Es su primera vez. Tiene siete años y es muy pequeño.

At the edge, he holds the wall with both hands. He does not move.

En el borde, se agarra de la pared con las dos manos. No se mueve.

"The ice is too slippery," he says. "I am going to fall."

«El hielo resbala demasiado», dice. «Me voy a caer».

"Everyone falls," Arin says. "I fall too, and it does not hurt much."

«Todos se caen», dice Arin. «Yo también me caigo, y no duele mucho».

She gets a small plastic chair from the side of the rink. "Hold this," she says. "Push it in front of you. Take small steps."

Toma una pequeña silla de plástico del costado de la pista. «Agárrate de esto», dice. «Empújala frente a ti. Da pasos pequeños».

He pushes the chair and moves one step. Then another. His knees shake, but he does not stop.

Empuja la silla y avanza un paso. Luego otro. Le tiemblan las rodillas, pero no se detiene.

After ten minutes, Arin shows him a new trick. "Now try the penguin walk. Put your feet apart. Turn your toes out. Hold your arms out like wings."

Después de diez minutos, Arin le muestra un truco nuevo. «Ahora prueba el paso del pingüino. Separa los pies. Gira las puntas hacia afuera. Extiende los brazos como alas».

He tries it and starts to laugh. Penguins are his favorite animal. He walks across the ice with his arms out. Arin laughs too.

Lo intenta y empieza a reír. Los pingüinos son su animal favorito. Camina por el hielo con los brazos extendidos. Arin también ríe.

He falls once and sits on the ice. "That did not hurt," he says in surprise. Arin pulls him up.

Se cae una vez y se queda sentado en el hielo. «Eso no dolió», dice sorprendido. Arin lo levanta.

Then he lets go of the chair. He takes ten penguin steps all by himself. At the end, he slides a little. Arin stands back and puts her hands in her pockets.

Entonces suelta la silla. Da diez pasos de pingüino él solito. Al final, se desliza un poco. Arin se queda atrás y se pone las manos en los bolsillos.

"Look at me!" he shouts. "I can skate!"

«¡Mírame!», grita. «¡Sé patinar!».
