Arin skates twice a week. Today she takes her little cousin to the ice rink. It is his first time. He is seven years old and very small.
अरिन हफ़्ते में दो बार स्केटिंग करती है। आज वह अपने छोटे चचेरे भाई को आइस रिंक पर ले जाती है। यह उसका पहली बार है। वह सात साल का है और बहुत छोटा है।
At the edge, he holds the wall with both hands. He does not move.
किनारे पर वह दोनों हाथों से दीवार पकड़े खड़ा है। वह हिलता तक नहीं।
"The ice is too slippery," he says. "I am going to fall."
"बर्फ़ बहुत फिसलन भरी है," वह कहता है। "मैं गिर जाऊँगा।"
"Everyone falls," Arin says. "I fall too, and it does not hurt much."
"गिरता तो हर कोई है," अरिन कहती है। "मैं भी गिरती हूँ, और ज़्यादा चोट नहीं लगती।"
She gets a small plastic chair from the side of the rink. "Hold this," she says. "Push it in front of you. Take small steps."
वह रिंक के किनारे से एक छोटी प्लास्टिक की कुर्सी ले आती है। "इसे पकड़ो," वह कहती है। "इसे अपने आगे धकेलो। छोटे-छोटे क़दम लो।"
He pushes the chair and moves one step. Then another. His knees shake, but he does not stop.
वह कुर्सी को धकेलता है और एक क़दम आगे बढ़ता है। फिर एक और। उसके घुटने काँप रहे हैं, पर वह रुकता नहीं।
After ten minutes, Arin shows him a new trick. "Now try the penguin walk. Put your feet apart. Turn your toes out. Hold your arms out like wings."
दस मिनट बाद अरिन उसे एक नई तरकीब दिखाती है। "अब पेंगुइन वाली चाल आज़माओ। पैर अलग-अलग रखो। पंजे बाहर की ओर करो। हाथ पंखों की तरह फैला लो।"
He tries it and starts to laugh. Penguins are his favorite animal. He walks across the ice with his arms out. Arin laughs too.
वह कोशिश करता है और हँसने लगता है। पेंगुइन उसका सबसे पसंदीदा जानवर है। वह हाथ फैलाए हुए बर्फ़ पर चलता है। अरिन भी हँस पड़ती है।
He falls once and sits on the ice. "That did not hurt," he says in surprise. Arin pulls him up.
वह एक बार गिरता है और बर्फ़ पर बैठ जाता है। "इससे तो चोट नहीं लगी," वह हैरानी से कहता है। अरिन उसे उठा लेती है।
Then he lets go of the chair. He takes ten penguin steps all by himself. At the end, he slides a little. Arin stands back and puts her hands in her pockets.
फिर वह कुर्सी छोड़ देता है। वह अकेले ही पेंगुइन की दस चालें चलता है। आख़िर में वह थोड़ा फिसल जाता है। अरिन पीछे खड़ी हो जाती है और अपने हाथ जेबों में डाल लेती है।
"Look at me!" he shouts. "I can skate!"
"मुझे देखो!" वह चिल्लाता है। "मैं स्केटिंग कर सकता हूँ!"
