The Handmade Card

Emre has only five dollars. Tomorrow is his mother's birthday. He wants to give her a card.

एमरे के पास सिर्फ़ पाँच डॉलर हैं। कल उसकी माँ का जन्मदिन है। वह उन्हें एक कार्ड देना चाहता है।

On the way home, he looks at the cards in a shop. One has a big yellow flower on it. It is beautiful, but it costs four dollars. Then he will have almost nothing left.

घर लौटते समय वह एक दुकान में कार्ड देखता है। एक कार्ड पर एक बड़ा पीला फूल बना है। वह सुंदर है, लेकिन उसकी क़ीमत चार डॉलर है। तब उसके पास लगभग कुछ नहीं बचेगा।

At home, he takes paper and colored pens from his desk. "I will make my own card," he thinks.

घर पर वह अपनी मेज़ से काग़ज़ और रंगीन पेन निकालता है। "मैं अपना कार्ड ख़ुद बनाऊँगा," वह सोचता है।

He draws a flower. The lines are not straight, and the colors are too dark. It looks like a green potato. Emre laughs, but he also feels sad. He puts the paper in the bin and puts on his shoes.

वह एक फूल बनाता है। रेखाएँ सीधी नहीं हैं और रंग बहुत गहरे हैं। वह हरे आलू जैसा दिखता है। एमरे हँसता है, लेकिन उदास भी हो जाता है। वह काग़ज़ को कूड़ेदान में डाल देता है और जूते पहन लेता है।

"I will just buy the card," he says to himself.

"मैं बस कार्ड ख़रीद लूँगा," वह ख़ुद से कहता है।

At the door, he stops. He looks at the kitchen. The blue kettle sits on the stove. His mother's red cup stands by the window, next to the plants. Every morning she sits there and drinks her tea.

दरवाज़े पर वह रुक जाता है। वह रसोई की ओर देखता है। नीली केतली चूल्हे पर रखी है। माँ का लाल कप खिड़की के पास, पौधों के बगल में रखा है। हर सुबह वे वहीं बैठकर अपनी चाय पीती हैं।

Emre goes back to his desk. He takes a new paper and draws the kitchen. He draws the kettle, the cup, the plants and the window. It takes an hour. This time he does not worry about straight lines.

एमरे अपनी मेज़ पर लौट आता है। वह एक नया काग़ज़ लेता है और रसोई बनाता है। वह केतली, कप, पौधे और खिड़की बनाता है। इसमें एक घंटा लग जाता है। इस बार उसे सीधी रेखाओं की चिंता नहीं होती।

The next morning, he gives the card to his mother. She looks at it for a long time.

अगली सुबह वह माँ को कार्ड देता है। वे उसे बहुत देर तक देखती रहती हैं।

"This is our kitchen," she says. "And that is my cup."

"यह तो हमारी रसोई है," वे कहती हैं। "और वह मेरा कप है।"

She takes a magnet. She puts the card in the middle of the fridge door.

वे एक चुंबक उठाती हैं। वे कार्ड को फ़्रिज के दरवाज़े के बीचोंबीच लगा देती हैं।
