The Handmade Card

Emre has only five dollars. Tomorrow is his mother's birthday. He wants to give her a card.

Emre hanya punya lima dolar. Besok adalah hari ulang tahun ibunya. Ia ingin memberi ibunya sebuah kartu.

On the way home, he looks at the cards in a shop. One has a big yellow flower on it. It is beautiful, but it costs four dollars. Then he will have almost nothing left.

Dalam perjalanan pulang, ia melihat-lihat kartu di sebuah toko. Salah satunya bergambar bunga kuning yang besar. Kartu itu cantik, tetapi harganya empat dolar. Uangnya hampir tidak akan tersisa.

At home, he takes paper and colored pens from his desk. "I will make my own card," he thinks.

Di rumah, ia mengambil kertas dan pensil warna dari mejanya. "Aku akan membuat kartuku sendiri," pikirnya.

He draws a flower. The lines are not straight, and the colors are too dark. It looks like a green potato. Emre laughs, but he also feels sad. He puts the paper in the bin and puts on his shoes.

Ia menggambar sebuah bunga. Garis-garisnya tidak lurus, dan warnanya terlalu gelap. Gambarnya mirip kentang hijau. Emre tertawa, tetapi ia juga merasa sedih. Ia memasukkan kertas itu ke tempat sampah lalu memakai sepatunya.

"I will just buy the card," he says to himself.

"Aku beli saja kartunya," katanya pada dirinya sendiri.

At the door, he stops. He looks at the kitchen. The blue kettle sits on the stove. His mother's red cup stands by the window, next to the plants. Every morning she sits there and drinks her tea.

Di pintu, ia berhenti. Ia melihat ke arah dapur. Ketel biru itu terletak di atas kompor. Cangkir merah ibunya berdiri di dekat jendela, di samping tanaman-tanaman. Setiap pagi ibunya duduk di sana dan minum teh.

Emre goes back to his desk. He takes a new paper and draws the kitchen. He draws the kettle, the cup, the plants and the window. It takes an hour. This time he does not worry about straight lines.

Emre kembali ke mejanya. Ia mengambil kertas baru dan menggambar dapur itu. Ia menggambar ketel, cangkir, tanaman, dan jendelanya. Itu memakan waktu satu jam. Kali ini ia tidak mengkhawatirkan garis yang lurus.

The next morning, he gives the card to his mother. She looks at it for a long time.

Keesokan paginya, ia memberikan kartu itu kepada ibunya. Ibunya memandangnya lama sekali.

"This is our kitchen," she says. "And that is my cup."

"Ini dapur kita," katanya. "Dan itu cangkirku."

She takes a magnet. She puts the card in the middle of the fridge door.
