Arin skates twice a week. Today she takes her little cousin to the ice rink. It is his first time. He is seven years old and very small.
Arin patina duas vezes por semana. Hoje ela leva o priminho à pista de gelo. É a primeira vez dele. Ele tem sete anos e é muito pequeno.
At the edge, he holds the wall with both hands. He does not move.
Na beirada, ele se agarra à parede com as duas mãos. Não se mexe.
"The ice is too slippery," he says. "I am going to fall."
"O gelo é escorregadio demais", diz ele. "Eu vou cair."
"Everyone falls," Arin says. "I fall too, and it does not hurt much."
"Todo mundo cai", diz Arin. "Eu também caio, e não dói muito."
She gets a small plastic chair from the side of the rink. "Hold this," she says. "Push it in front of you. Take small steps."
Ela pega uma cadeirinha de plástico na lateral da pista. "Segure isto", diz. "Empurre na sua frente. Dê passos pequenos."
He pushes the chair and moves one step. Then another. His knees shake, but he does not stop.
Ele empurra a cadeira e dá um passo. Depois outro. Os joelhos tremem, mas ele não para.
After ten minutes, Arin shows him a new trick. "Now try the penguin walk. Put your feet apart. Turn your toes out. Hold your arms out like wings."
Depois de dez minutos, Arin mostra um truque novo. "Agora tente andar como um pinguim. Afaste os pés. Vire as pontas para fora. Abra os braços como asas."
He tries it and starts to laugh. Penguins are his favorite animal. He walks across the ice with his arms out. Arin laughs too.
Ele tenta e começa a rir. Pinguins são o animal favorito dele. Ele atravessa o gelo de braços abertos. Arin também ri.
He falls once and sits on the ice. "That did not hurt," he says in surprise. Arin pulls him up.
Ele cai uma vez e fica sentado no gelo. "Isso não doeu", diz, surpreso. Arin o levanta.
Then he lets go of the chair. He takes ten penguin steps all by himself. At the end, he slides a little. Arin stands back and puts her hands in her pockets.
Então ele solta a cadeira. Dá dez passos de pinguim sozinho. No final, desliza um pouco. Arin se afasta e põe as mãos nos bolsos.
"Look at me!" he shouts. "I can skate!"
"Olha para mim!", grita ele. "Eu sei patinar!"
