The Sugar in the Soup

On Thursday evening, Sol went to a cooking class. She did not know anyone. The teacher gave her a partner.

Na quinta-feira à noite, Sol foi a uma aula de culinária. Ela não conhecia ninguém. O professor lhe deu um parceiro.

The partner was a tall man named Ivo. "Hello," he said. "Let's make soup."

O parceiro era um homem alto chamado Ivo. "Olá", ele disse. "Vamos fazer sopa."

Sol cut the onions and the carrots. Ivo put water in the pot. They worked well together.

Sol cortou as cebolas e as cenouras. Ivo colocou água na panela. Eles trabalharam bem juntos.

The teacher said, "Now add one spoon of salt." Sol took a white jar from the table. She put in one spoon. She did not look at the jar.

O professor disse: "Agora adicionem uma colher de sal." Sol pegou um pote branco da mesa. Ela colocou uma colher. Não olhou para o pote.

Ivo tasted the soup. His face changed. "Is it good?" Sol asked. "Taste it," he said.

Ivo provou a sopa. O rosto dele mudou. "Está boa?", perguntou Sol. "Prove", ele disse.

Sol tasted it. The soup was sweet! It tasted like a cake with carrots.

Sol provou. A sopa estava doce! Tinha gosto de bolo com cenoura.

She looked at the jar. The word on it was sugar. "Oh no!" she said. Ivo laughed, and Sol laughed too.

Ela olhou para o pote. A palavra nele era açúcar. "Ah, não!", disse ela. Ivo riu, e Sol riu também.

Other people looked at them. The teacher smiled. "Start again," she said.

Outras pessoas olharam para eles. O professor sorriu. "Comecem de novo", disse.

This time, Sol read every jar. Ivo cut new onions. The new soup was very good.

Desta vez, Sol leu todos os potes. Ivo cortou cebolas novas. A sopa nova ficou muito boa.

After class, Ivo held his empty bowl. "Do you want to get coffee next week?" he asked.

Depois da aula, Ivo segurou sua tigela vazia. "Quer tomar um café na semana que vem?", ele perguntou.

"Yes," Sol said. "But you make the coffee."

"Quero", disse Sol. "Mas você faz o café."
