The Sugar in the Soup

On Thursday evening, Sol went to a cooking class. She did not know anyone. The teacher gave her a partner.

Pada Kamis sore, Sol pergi ke kelas memasak. Ia tidak mengenal siapa pun. Guru memberinya seorang pasangan.

The partner was a tall man named Ivo. "Hello," he said. "Let's make soup."

Pasangannya adalah seorang pria jangkung bernama Ivo. "Halo," katanya. "Ayo kita buat sup."

Sol cut the onions and the carrots. Ivo put water in the pot. They worked well together.

Sol memotong bawang dan wortel. Ivo menuang air ke dalam panci. Mereka bekerja sama dengan baik.

The teacher said, "Now add one spoon of salt." Sol took a white jar from the table. She put in one spoon. She did not look at the jar.

Guru berkata, "Sekarang tambahkan satu sendok garam." Sol mengambil toples putih dari meja. Ia memasukkan satu sendok. Ia tidak melihat toples itu.

Ivo tasted the soup. His face changed. "Is it good?" Sol asked. "Taste it," he said.

Ivo mencicipi sup itu. Wajahnya berubah. "Enak?" tanya Sol. "Cicipi saja," katanya.

Sol tasted it. The soup was sweet! It tasted like a cake with carrots.

Sol mencicipinya. Supnya manis! Rasanya seperti kue dengan wortel.

She looked at the jar. The word on it was sugar. "Oh no!" she said. Ivo laughed, and Sol laughed too.

Ia melihat toples itu. Kata yang tertulis di sana adalah gula. "Aduh!" katanya. Ivo tertawa, dan Sol ikut tertawa.

Other people looked at them. The teacher smiled. "Start again," she said.

Orang-orang lain menoleh kepada mereka. Guru tersenyum. "Mulai lagi dari awal," katanya.

This time, Sol read every jar. Ivo cut new onions. The new soup was very good.

Kali ini, Sol membaca setiap toples. Ivo memotong bawang yang baru. Sup yang baru itu enak sekali.

After class, Ivo held his empty bowl. "Do you want to get coffee next week?" he asked.

Setelah kelas, Ivo memegang mangkuknya yang kosong. "Mau minum kopi bersamaku minggu depan?" tanyanya.

"Yes," Sol said. "But you make the coffee."

"Mau," kata Sol. "Tapi kamu yang membuat kopinya."
