The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean

A bean and a hot coal met each other on the highroad, and as they were both rolling along in the same direction they soon struck up a friendship.

Um feijão e um carvão em brasa se encontraram na estrada, e, como ambos rolavam na mesma direção, logo travaram amizade.

Presently they were joined by a straw, and the three began talking together. They were all going out in the world to seek their fortunes.

Pouco depois, juntou-se a eles uma palha, e os três começaram a conversar. Todos iam pelo mundo em busca de fortuna.

“It is just a bit of luck that I can travel about in this way,” said the bean. “If I had not been a stout active fellow I would have been boiled into soup by now. The mistress was about to throw me into the pot with a lot of other beans, but I managed to slip through her fingers and rolled out through the doorway and down the steps without her even noticing I was gone.”

— Foi pura sorte eu poder viajar assim — disse o feijão. — Se eu não fosse um sujeito robusto e ativo, já estaria fervido em sopa a esta hora. A patroa estava prestes a me jogar na panela com um monte de outros feijões, mas consegui escapar por entre seus dedos e rolei pela porta e pelos degraus abaixo sem que ela sequer notasse que eu tinha sumido.

“That was a clever trick,” said the hot coal. “I, too, am a lively chap. I and my brothers were set to heat a kettle, but I jumped out of the fire, and I was so hot the cook did not dare to touch me. She pushed me out of doors with her foot, and now I am free to go about the world as I choose, and seek my fortune.”

— Que truque esperto — disse o carvão em brasa. — Eu também sou um sujeito animado. Eu e meus irmãos fomos postos para esquentar uma chaleira, mas pulei para fora do fogo, e estava tão quente que a cozinheira não ousou me tocar. Ela me empurrou porta afora com o pé, e agora estou livre para percorrer o mundo como bem entender, em busca da minha fortuna.

The straw sighed. “I was never as active as that,” she said. “Always wherever the wind blew me I went. The farmer had picked up a whole armful of straws to make a bed for the cow; but the wind caught me up and carried me off—and here I am.”

A palha suspirou. — Eu nunca fui tão ativa assim — disse ela. — Sempre fui para onde o vento me levasse. O fazendeiro tinha recolhido um braçado inteiro de palhas para fazer uma cama para a vaca; mas o vento me ergueu e me carregou embora — e aqui estou eu.

While they were talking in this way the comrades came to a brook, and this stopped their journey, for they did not know how to get across. The straw could easily have sailed over on the first puff of wind, but that way would not do for the other two.

Enquanto conversavam assim, os companheiros chegaram a um riacho, e isso interrompeu a viagem, pois não sabiam como atravessar. A palha poderia facilmente ter voado para o outro lado ao primeiro sopro de vento, mas esse jeito não serviria para os outros dois.

“Listen!” said the straw. “I am long enough to reach from one side of the stream to the other. I will lay myself across it like a bridge, and then you can both walk on over me without getting wet.”

— Escutem! — disse a palha. — Eu sou comprida o bastante para alcançar de um lado do riacho ao outro. Vou me deitar atravessada, como uma ponte, e assim vocês dois podem passar por cima de mim sem se molhar.

To this plan the other two were glad to agree, so the straw laid herself across the stream.

Os outros dois aceitaram o plano de bom grado, e a palha se deitou atravessada sobre o riacho.

“You go first,” said the bean, for he was a cautious fellow, and wanted to see whether the bridge was safe before he tried it.

— Vá você primeiro — disse o feijão, pois era um sujeito cauteloso e queria ver se a ponte era segura antes de arriscar-se.

The coal, however, was quick and fiery. He ran out on the straw, but half-way over he grew dizzy and had to stop.

O carvão, porém, era rápido e ardente. Correu sobre a palha, mas na metade do caminho ficou tonto e teve de parar.

“Quick! quick!” cried the straw. “I am burning”; for the coal was still very hot.

— Depressa! Depressa! — gritou a palha. — Estou pegando fogo! — pois o carvão ainda estava muito quente.

“Wait,” said the coal, balancing himself. “Just a minute!”

— Espere — disse o carvão, equilibrando-se. — Só um minuto!

But the straw could not wait even for a minute. The coal had burned through it, and down they both went into the water, the coal hissing as it fell.

Mas a palha não podia esperar nem um minuto sequer. O carvão já a tinha queimado por completo, e os dois caíram na água, o carvão chiando ao cair.

That seemed so comical to the bean that it began to laugh. It laughed and laughed; it laughed so hard that at last it split its skin, and that would have been the end of it if a tailor had not chanced to come by just then.

Aquilo pareceu tão cômico ao feijão que ele começou a rir. Riu e riu; riu tanto que por fim rachou a casca, e aquele teria sido o seu fim se um alfaiate não tivesse passado por ali bem naquele momento.

“Help! help!” cried the bean.

— Socorro! Socorro! — gritou o feijão.

The tailor looked all about him, and then he saw the bean lying on the ground. He picked it up, and it did not take him long to see what was the matter with it. “This slit can be easily mended,” said he, and he whipped out his needle and thread and sewed up the bean in a trice. Unluckily he had only black thread, and the stitches made a line of black down the side of the bean. And ever since then, if you look, you will see that every bean of that kind has a black line down one side of it.

O alfaiate olhou ao redor e então viu o feijão caído no chão. Pegou-o e não demorou a perceber qual era o problema. — Este rasgão pode ser facilmente consertado — disse ele, e tirou logo a agulha e a linha, costurando o feijão num instante. Infelizmente, só tinha linha preta, e os pontos deixaram uma listra preta ao longo do feijão. E desde então, se você observar, verá que todo feijão dessa espécie tem uma listra preta de um lado.
