Today is his daughter's birthday. Kwesi gets up early. He wants to make pancakes for her breakfast.
Hoje é o aniversário da filha dele. Kwesi acorda cedo. Ele quer fazer panquecas para o café da manhã dela.
He has flour, eggs, and milk. He mixes everything in a big bowl. The pan on the stove is hot. He pours a round shape into the pan and waits.
Ele tem farinha, ovos e leite. Mistura tudo numa tigela grande. A frigideira no fogão está quente. Ele despeja uma forma redonda na frigideira e espera.
His daughter comes into the kitchen in her pajamas. "Dad, it smells good!" she says.
A filha dele entra na cozinha de pijama. "Pai, que cheiro bom!", diz ela.
"Happy birthday!" Kwesi says. "Watch this. I flip the pancake like a chef."
"Feliz aniversário!", diz Kwesi. "Olhe só. Eu viro a panqueca como um chef."
He shakes the pan and throws the pancake up. It goes up, up, up. It does not come down.
Ele balança a frigideira e joga a panqueca para cima. Ela sobe, sobe, sobe. Não desce.
They look at the roof. The pancake sticks to the kitchen lamp. It hangs there like a hat.
Eles olham para o teto. A panqueca gruda na luminária da cozinha. Ela fica pendurada ali como um chapéu.
His daughter laughs and laughs. "Dad, the lamp has a pancake hat!"
A filha dele ri e ri. "Pai, a luminária está com um chapéu de panqueca!"
Kwesi laughs too. He gets a chair and a spoon. He takes it down and puts it in the bin.
Kwesi ri também. Ele pega uma cadeira e uma colher. Tira a panqueca de lá e a joga no lixo.
"Let us make a new one together," he says. "You flip this time."
"Vamos fazer uma nova juntos", ele diz. "Desta vez, você vira."
She stands next to him at the stove. He gives her the pan. She waits for the bubbles. Then she shakes the pan, and the pancake goes up.
Ela fica ao lado dele no fogão. Ele entrega a frigideira a ela. Ela espera pelas bolhas. Depois balança a frigideira, e a panqueca sobe.
It turns once and lands in the pan. It is perfect.
Ela dá uma volta e cai na frigideira. Está perfeita.
"Again!" she shouts. Kwesi claps and puts the pancake on her plate.
"De novo!", ela grita. Kwesi bate palmas e coloca a panqueca no prato dela.
