Capa de The Light in the Empty Shop

The old shop on Taini's street was closed all year. The windows were dusty. A sign on the door said "Closed."

As vitrines estavam empoeiradas. Uma placa na porta dizia "Fechado".

Taini passed the shop every day on her way home. She never looked at it. Then one evening, she saw a light inside. The next night, the light was there again. It was there every night.

Ela estava lá todas as noites.

"Is someone in the old shop?" she asked her neighbor.

"Tem alguém na loja antiga?", ela perguntou à vizinha.

"I do not know," her neighbor said. "The door is always locked."

"Não sei", disse a vizinha. "A porta está sempre trancada."

This was very strange. Taini thought about the light at work. She thought about it at dinner.

Isso era muito estranho. Taini pensava na luz no trabalho. Pensava nela no jantar.

On Thursday evening, she stopped at the window. She cleaned the glass with her sleeve and looked inside.

A man stood in the shop with a big brush. He had white paint on his shirt. The walls were bright and clean.

As paredes estavam claras e limpas.

Taini knocked on the glass. The man opened the door.

Taini bateu no vidro. O homem abriu a porta.

"Hello," he said. "Did I scare you?"

"Olá", ele disse. "Eu assustei você?"

"I see your light every night," Taini said.

"Eu vejo a sua luz todas as noites", disse Taini.

"I work here after my day job," he said. "This shop is my new bakery."

"Eu trabalho aqui depois do meu emprego do dia", disse ele. "Esta loja é a minha nova padaria."

"A bakery!" Taini said.

"Uma padaria!", disse Taini.

"Yes. Come on the first day. The first bread is for you."

"Sim. Venha no primeiro dia. O primeiro pão é para você."

"Then I am first in line," Taini said.

"Então eu sou a primeira da fila", disse Taini.
