The day was very hot. Vito sat on the step outside his house. His little sister sat next to him. They wanted ice cream. Vito had five coins in his hand.
O dia estava muito quente. Vito estava sentado no degrau na frente de casa. A irmãzinha dele estava sentada ao lado. Eles queriam sorvete. Vito tinha cinco moedas na mão.
Then he heard a song. It was the ice cream truck! He jumped up. "Stay here," he told his sister.
Então ele ouviu uma música. Era o caminhão de sorvete! Ele se levantou de um pulo. "Fique aqui", disse à irmã.
The truck came down the street. Vito waved both arms. The driver did not see him. The truck went past his house and did not stop.
O caminhão veio pela rua. Vito acenou com os dois braços. O motorista não o viu. O caminhão passou pela casa dele e não parou.
Vito ran after it. His legs were fast, but the truck was faster. He ran past the bakery and the school. His face was red and wet.
Vito correu atrás. Suas pernas eram rápidas, mas o caminhão era mais. Ele correu pela padaria e pela escola. Seu rosto estava vermelho e molhado.
The truck turned left at the corner. Vito turned left too. He saw it by the park gate. It stopped there. A line of children waited.
O caminhão virou à esquerda na esquina. Vito virou à esquerda também. Ele o viu perto do portão do parque. Ali ele parou. Uma fila de crianças esperava.
Vito came to the end of the line. He could not talk. He just held out his coins.
Vito chegou ao fim da fila. Não conseguia falar. Só estendeu as moedas.
The driver looked at him and laughed. "Did you run all the way?" he asked.
O motorista olhou para ele e riu. "Você correu o caminho todo?", perguntou.
"Yes," Vito said. "One cone, please. My sister is at home. She is hot too."
"Sim", disse Vito. "Uma casquinha, por favor. Minha irmã está em casa. Ela também está com calor."
The driver gave him two cones. "This one is free," he said. "Take it to her."
O motorista lhe deu duas casquinhas. "Esta é de graça", disse ele. "Leve para ela."
Vito ran home. Both cones were a little soft when he got there.
Vito correu para casa. As duas casquinhas estavam um pouco moles quando ele chegou.
