The Ice Cream Truck

The day was very hot. Vito sat on the step outside his house. His little sister sat next to him. They wanted ice cream. Vito had five coins in his hand.

Hari itu sangat panas. Vito duduk di anak tangga di depan rumahnya. Adik perempuannya duduk di sebelahnya. Mereka ingin es krim. Vito menggenggam lima koin di tangannya.

Then he heard a song. It was the ice cream truck! He jumped up. "Stay here," he told his sister.

Lalu ia mendengar sebuah lagu. Itu truk es krim! Ia melompat berdiri. "Tunggu di sini," katanya kepada adiknya.

The truck came down the street. Vito waved both arms. The driver did not see him. The truck went past his house and did not stop.

Truk itu datang menyusuri jalan. Vito melambaikan kedua lengannya. Si pengemudi tidak melihatnya. Truk itu melewati rumahnya dan tidak berhenti.

Vito ran after it. His legs were fast, but the truck was faster. He ran past the bakery and the school. His face was red and wet.

Vito berlari mengejarnya. Kakinya cepat, tetapi truk itu lebih cepat. Ia berlari melewati toko roti dan sekolah. Wajahnya merah dan basah.

The truck turned left at the corner. Vito turned left too. He saw it by the park gate. It stopped there. A line of children waited.

Truk itu berbelok ke kiri di tikungan. Vito juga berbelok ke kiri. Ia melihatnya di dekat gerbang taman. Truk itu berhenti di sana. Sebaris anak-anak sedang menunggu.

Vito came to the end of the line. He could not talk. He just held out his coins.

Vito sampai di ujung antrean. Ia tidak bisa bicara. Ia hanya mengulurkan koin-koinnya.

The driver looked at him and laughed. "Did you run all the way?" he asked.

Si pengemudi memandangnya dan tertawa. "Kamu berlari sepanjang jalan?" tanyanya.

"Yes," Vito said. "One cone, please. My sister is at home. She is hot too."

"Ya," kata Vito. "Satu cone, Pak. Adik saya ada di rumah. Dia juga kepanasan."

The driver gave him two cones. "This one is free," he said. "Take it to her."

Si pengemudi memberinya dua cone. "Yang ini gratis," katanya. "Bawa untuknya."

Vito ran home. Both cones were a little soft when he got there.

Vito berlari pulang. Kedua cone itu sudah agak lembek ketika ia sampai.
