The day was very hot. Vito sat on the step outside his house. His little sister sat next to him. They wanted ice cream. Vito had five coins in his hand.
El día era muy caluroso. Vito estaba sentado en el escalón frente a su casa. Su hermanita estaba sentada a su lado. Querían helado. Vito tenía cinco monedas en la mano.
Then he heard a song. It was the ice cream truck! He jumped up. "Stay here," he told his sister.
Entonces oyó una canción. ¡Era el camión de helados! Se puso de pie de un salto. «Quédate aquí», le dijo a su hermana.
The truck came down the street. Vito waved both arms. The driver did not see him. The truck went past his house and did not stop.
El camión venía por la calle. Vito agitó los dos brazos. El conductor no lo vio. El camión pasó frente a su casa y no se detuvo.
Vito ran after it. His legs were fast, but the truck was faster. He ran past the bakery and the school. His face was red and wet.
Vito corrió tras él. Sus piernas eran rápidas, pero el camión era más rápido. Corrió frente a la panadería y la escuela. Tenía la cara roja y mojada.
The truck turned left at the corner. Vito turned left too. He saw it by the park gate. It stopped there. A line of children waited.
El camión dobló a la izquierda en la esquina. Vito también dobló a la izquierda. Lo vio junto a la entrada del parque. Se detuvo allí. Una fila de niños esperaba.
Vito came to the end of the line. He could not talk. He just held out his coins.
Vito llegó al final de la fila. No podía hablar. Solo extendió sus monedas.
The driver looked at him and laughed. "Did you run all the way?" he asked.
El conductor lo miró y se rio. «¿Corriste todo el camino?», preguntó.
"Yes," Vito said. "One cone, please. My sister is at home. She is hot too."
«Sí», dijo Vito. «Un cono, por favor. Mi hermana está en casa. Ella también tiene calor».
The driver gave him two cones. "This one is free," he said. "Take it to her."
El conductor le dio dos conos. «Este es gratis», dijo. «Llévaselo a ella».
Vito ran home. Both cones were a little soft when he got there.
Vito corrió a casa. Los dos conos estaban un poco blandos cuando llegó.
