Alba grows pumpkins in her garden. This year she wants to win the town contest. The prize is for the biggest pumpkin. She waters her pumpkin every day. She even talks to it.
अल्बा अपने बग़ीचे में कद्दू उगाती है। इस साल वह शहर की प्रतियोगिता जीतना चाहती है। इनाम सबसे बड़े कद्दू के लिए है। वह हर दिन अपने कद्दू को पानी देती है। वह तो उससे बातें भी करती है।
But the pumpkin stays small. In October, it is as small as a melon. Her neighbor's pumpkin is as big as a chair.
लेकिन कद्दू छोटा ही रहता है। अक्तूबर में वह एक खरबूजे जितना छोटा है। उसके पड़ोसी का कद्दू कुर्सी जितना बड़ा है।
On contest day, the town square is full. The pumpkins sit in a long line. The judges measure each pumpkin. Alba puts her pumpkin at the end.
प्रतियोगिता के दिन शहर का चौक भरा हुआ है। कद्दू एक लंबी क़तार में रखे हैं। जज हर कद्दू को नापते हैं। अल्बा अपना कद्दू सबसे आख़िर में रख देती है।
People look at it and smile. "Is that a pumpkin?" a boy asks.
लोग उसे देखकर मुस्कुराते हैं। "क्या वह कद्दू है?" एक लड़का पूछता है।
Alba laughs. "It is a baby," she says.
अल्बा हँसती है। "यह बच्चा है," वह कहती है।
A man with a giant pumpkin wins the big prize. Alba claps for him. She does not win.
एक आदमी अपने विशाल कद्दू के साथ बड़ा इनाम जीत जाता है। अल्बा उसके लिए ताली बजाती है। वह नहीं जीतती।
The next day, the town has a pie contest. Alba has a plan. She cuts her small pumpkin and bakes a pie. The kitchen smells sweet.
अगले दिन शहर में पाई की प्रतियोगिता है। अल्बा के पास एक योजना है। वह अपना छोटा कद्दू काटती है और पाई बनाती है। रसोई में मीठी ख़ुशबू फैल जाती है।
She puts the pie on the long table. The judges taste it. One judge closes her eyes. Then she writes a big number on her paper.
वह पाई को लंबी मेज़ पर रख देती है। जज उसे चखते हैं। एक जज आँखें बंद कर लेती है। फिर वह अपने काग़ज़ पर एक बड़ा नंबर लिख देती है।
Alba wins the pie table. A judge asks, "What is the secret?"
अल्बा पाई की मेज़ जीत जाती है। एक जज पूछती है, "इसका राज़ क्या है?"
"A small pumpkin," Alba says. She smiles and cuts the judge a second slice.
"एक छोटा कद्दू," अल्बा कहती है। वह मुस्कुराती है और जज को दूसरा टुकड़ा काटकर देती है।
