The Sauce on the White Shirt

Belen sits at a small table in a café. Her job interview is at two o'clock. She is nervous, so she eats her pasta very fast. Then a red drop of tomato sauce jumps onto her white shirt.

बेलेन एक कैफ़े में छोटी-सी मेज़ पर बैठी है। उसका नौकरी का इंटरव्यू दो बजे है। वह घबराई हुई है, इसलिए बहुत जल्दी-जल्दी पास्ता खा रही है। तभी टमाटर की चटनी की एक लाल बूँद उछलकर उसकी सफ़ेद कमीज़ पर आ गिरती है।

"Oh no!" she says. She rubs the spot with a napkin. It only gets bigger.

"अरे नहीं!" वह कहती है। वह नैपकिन से उस दाग़ को रगड़ती है। वह बस और बड़ा हो जाता है।

She looks at the clock. It is half past one. The office is ten minutes away, but her home is far. There is no time to change.

वह घड़ी देखती है। डेढ़ बज रहा है। दफ़्तर यहाँ से दस मिनट दूर है, लेकिन उसका घर बहुत दूर है। कपड़े बदलने का समय नहीं है।

Belen thinks for a moment. She puts on her grey jacket and buttons it to the top. The red spot is gone. It is warm in the café, but she says nothing.

बेलेन एक पल सोचती है। वह अपनी स्लेटी जैकेट पहन लेती है और उसके सारे बटन ऊपर तक बंद कर लेती है। लाल दाग़ छिप जाता है। कैफ़े में गरमी है, पर वह कुछ नहीं कहती।

At the office, she shakes the manager's hand. He is a tall man with a kind face. They sit down at a big table. Then Belen sees something on his blue tie. It is a brown stain, the size of a coin.

दफ़्तर में वह मैनेजर से हाथ मिलाती है। वह एक लंबा आदमी है जिसका चेहरा दयालु है। वे एक बड़ी मेज़ पर बैठ जाते हैं। तभी बेलेन को उसकी नीली टाई पर कुछ दिखता है। वह सिक्के जितना बड़ा भूरा दाग़ है।

"Is that coffee?" she asks before she can stop herself.

"क्या वह कॉफ़ी है?" वह ख़ुद को रोक पाने से पहले ही पूछ बैठती है।

The manager looks down and laughs. "Yes. My cup fell this morning. Please, take off your jacket. It is hot in here."

मैनेजर नीचे देखता है और हँस पड़ता है। "हाँ। आज सुबह मेरा कप गिर गया था। आप प्लीज़ अपनी जैकेट उतार दीजिए। यहाँ बहुत गरमी है।"

"No, thank you," Belen says. "I have my own problem under here."

"जी नहीं, शुक्रिया," बेलेन कहती है। "मेरी अपनी एक परेशानी इसके नीचे छिपी है।"

She opens the jacket a little and shows him the red spot. They both laugh for a long time.

वह जैकेट को थोड़ा खोलकर उसे लाल दाग़ दिखा देती है। वे दोनों बहुत देर तक हँसते हैं।

After that, the talk is easy. She tells him about her old job and her best ideas. He asks good questions and writes some notes. At the end, he stands up. "Can you start on Monday?" he asks.

उसके बाद बातचीत आसान हो जाती है। वह उसे अपनी पुरानी नौकरी और अपने सबसे अच्छे विचारों के बारे में बताती है। वह अच्छे सवाल पूछता है और कुछ नोट लिखता है। आख़िर में वह खड़ा हो जाता है। "क्या आप सोमवार से शुरू कर सकती हैं?" वह पूछता है।
