The Repeated Numbers

Talia kept noticing the number twenty-seven everywhere. It showed up on the clock when she happened to glance at it. It appeared on receipts, and even on the license plate of the bus she took to school. At first she laughed it off. But after two weeks, it felt less like coincidence and more like a real pattern.

तालिया को हर जगह सत्ताईस नंबर दिखता रहता था। घड़ी पर, जब भी वह अचानक नज़र डालती। रसीदों पर, और स्कूल जाने वाली बस की नंबर प्लेट पर भी। पहले तो उसने इसे हँसकर टाल दिया। पर दो हफ़्ते बाद यह इत्तेफ़ाक़ कम और एक सचमुच का सिलसिला ज़्यादा लगने लगा।

She told her friend Kenji about it during lunch. "Maybe your brain is just noticing it more because you've started paying attention," he said. "That happens a lot. It's called frequency bias."

उसने लंच के समय अपने दोस्त केन्जी को इसके बारे में बताया। "शायद तुम्हारा दिमाग़ इसे इसलिए ज़्यादा देख रहा है क्योंकि तुमने ध्यान देना शुरू कर दिया है," उसने कहा। "ऐसा अक्सर होता है। इसे फ़्रीक्वेंसी बायस कहते हैं।"

"Maybe," Talia said, "but it's happened way too many times to just be that."

"हो सकता है," तालिया ने कहा, "पर यह इतनी बार हुआ है कि सिर्फ़ इतनी-सी बात नहीं हो सकती।"

That weekend, the school was holding a raffle to raise money for the art club. Each student could pick one ticket number between one and fifty. Talia stood at the table, staring at the list of numbers still available. Twenty-seven was there, along with thirty-one, which had always been her lucky number as a kid.

उस हफ़्ते के अंत में स्कूल आर्ट क्लब के लिए पैसे जुटाने को एक रैफ़ल कर रहा था। हर छात्र एक से पचास के बीच कोई एक टिकट नंबर चुन सकता था। तालिया मेज़ के पास खड़ी बचे हुए नंबरों की सूची को घूर रही थी। सत्ताईस वहाँ था, और इकतीस भी, जो बचपन से उसका लकी नंबर रहा था।

She had to choose between two numbers. One had followed her all month, and the other one she'd always trusted. Kenji, standing beside her, shrugged. "Either way, it's basically the same odds. Just pick whichever feels right."

उसे दो नंबरों में से एक चुनना था। एक पूरे महीने उसके पीछे-पीछे चलता रहा था, और दूसरे पर उसने हमेशा भरोसा किया था। उसके बगल में खड़े केन्जी ने कंधे उचकाए। "दोनों में मौक़ा लगभग एक जैसा है। जो ठीक लगे वही चुन लो।"

Talia thought about it for a moment longer, then wrote twenty-seven on her ticket. Somehow it felt like the number had earned its place. The reason behind it was probably nothing more than coincidence.

तालिया ने थोड़ी देर और सोचा, फिर अपने टिकट पर सत्ताईस लिख दिया। न जाने क्यों लगा कि इस नंबर ने अपनी जगह कमाई है। इसके पीछे की वजह शायद इत्तेफ़ाक़ के सिवा कुछ नहीं थी।

A week later, the raffle results were posted on the school notice board. Talia hadn't won the main prize. But she noticed something that made her smile: the winning ticket, drawn at random, was number thirty-one. She never did figure out why twenty-seven kept showing up all month. But she decided some mysteries were more fun left unsolved.

एक हफ़्ते बाद रैफ़ल के नतीजे स्कूल के सूचना-पट पर लगे। तालिया मुख्य इनाम नहीं जीती थी। पर उसने कुछ ऐसा देखा जिससे वह मुस्कुरा दी: बेतरतीब ढंग से निकला विजेता टिकट इकतीस नंबर का था। उसे कभी समझ नहीं आया कि सत्ताईस पूरे महीने क्यों दिखता रहा। पर उसने तय किया कि कुछ पहेलियाँ अनसुलझी छोड़ देने में ज़्यादा मज़ा है।
