The Friday Cookies

Every Friday, a plate of cookies sat in the kitchen. The cookies were soft and sweet. Nobody knew who brought them.

हर शुक्रवार रसोई में कुकीज़ की एक प्लेट रखी मिलती थी। कुकीज़ नरम और मीठी थीं। किसी को नहीं पता था कि उन्हें कौन लाता है।

Aiko asked her friends. "Not me," said one. "Not me," said another. Even the boss said no.

आइको ने अपने दोस्तों से पूछा। "मैं नहीं," एक ने कहा। "मैं भी नहीं," दूसरे ने कहा। यहाँ तक कि बॉस ने भी मना कर दिया।

Aiko wanted to know the answer. On Thursday night, she set her alarm for four o'clock.

आइको जवाब जानना चाहती थी। गुरुवार की रात उसने सुबह चार बजे का अलार्म लगाया।

On Friday morning, it was dark and cold. Aiko walked to the office. The street was empty.

शुक्रवार की सुबह अँधेरा और ठंड थी। आइको पैदल ऑफ़िस गई। सड़क ख़ाली थी।

The building was quiet. Then she heard a sound in the kitchen. The light was on.

इमारत शांत थी। फिर उसे रसोई से कुछ आवाज़ सुनाई दी। वहाँ बत्ती जल रही थी।

An old man in a blue shirt stood there. He was the night cleaner. He put cookies on the plate.

नीली क़मीज़ पहने एक बुज़ुर्ग आदमी वहाँ खड़े थे। वे रात की सफ़ाई करने वाले थे। वे प्लेट में कुकीज़ रख रहे थे।

"Good morning," Aiko said.

"गुड मॉर्निंग," आइको ने कहा।

The man jumped. "Oh! You are very early."

आदमी चौंक गए। "अरे! आप तो बहुत जल्दी आ गईं।"

"Are you the cookie person?" she asked.

"क्या आप ही कुकीज़ वाले हैं?" उसने पूछा।

"Yes," he said. "I bake them at home on Thursday night. The office is quiet at night. The cookies make the morning nice."

"हाँ," उन्होंने कहा। "मैं उन्हें गुरुवार की रात घर पर बनाता हूँ। रात में ऑफ़िस शांत रहता है। कुकीज़ से सुबह अच्छी हो जाती है।"

Aiko took a cookie. It was still warm.

आइको ने एक कुकी ली। वह अब भी गरम थी।

Later, she bought a card. She wrote, "Thank you for the cookies. We all love them." She put the card by the plate. Then she went to her desk.

बाद में उसने एक कार्ड ख़रीदा। उसने लिखा, "कुकीज़ के लिए धन्यवाद। हम सबको वे बहुत पसंद हैं।" उसने कार्ड प्लेट के पास रख दिया। फिर वह अपनी मेज़ पर चली गई।
