The Anniversary Question

Cora and Emil have been together for two years, and Cora has started to notice a pattern. Every time she brings up the future, even casually, Emil changes the subject.

कोरा और एमिल दो साल से साथ हैं, और कोरा को एक पैटर्न दिखने लगा है। जब भी वह भविष्य की बात छेड़ती है, चाहे यूँ ही, एमिल विषय बदल देता है।

Tonight, over dinner, she decides not to let it happen again. "Can I ask you something," she says, "and can you actually answer it this time?"

आज रात, खाने के दौरान, वह तय करती है कि इसे फिर नहीं होने देगी। "क्या मैं तुमसे कुछ पूछ सकती हूँ," वह कहती है, "और क्या तुम इस बार सचमुच जवाब दोगे?"

Emil sets down his fork. "That sounds serious."

"It's not meant to be scary," Cora says. "I just want to know where you see this going. Us, I mean. Not tomorrow. In a year, maybe two."

"डराने के लिए नहीं कह रही," कोरा कहती है। "मैं बस जानना चाहती हूँ कि तुम इसे कहाँ जाता देखते हो। हमें, मेरा मतलब है। कल नहीं। एक साल बाद, शायद दो।"

Emil is quiet for a moment. "Honestly? I've been avoiding that question because I don't have a clean answer for it."

एमिल एक पल चुप रहता है। "सच कहूँ? मैं इस सवाल से बचता रहा हूँ क्योंकि मेरे पास इसका कोई साफ़ जवाब नहीं है।"

"That's not the same as not caring," Cora says carefully. "But I've been assuming things I probably shouldn't have."

"इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि तुम्हें परवाह नहीं है," कोरा सावधानी से कहती है। "लेकिन मैं कुछ ऐसी बातें मानती रही हूँ जो शायद मुझे नहीं माननी चाहिए थीं।"

"Like what?"

"जैसे क्या?"

"Like maybe you're not sure about us at all. Like maybe I'm more invested in this than you are."

"जैसे शायद तुम हमारे बारे में बिलकुल पक्के नहीं हो। जैसे शायद मैं इस रिश्ते में तुमसे ज़्यादा डूबी हूँ।"

Emil shakes his head quickly. "That's not it. If I'm honest, I think about our future all the time. I just haven't figured out how to say any of it out loud. I don't want to sound like I'm making promises I can't keep."

एमिल जल्दी से सिर हिलाता है। "ऐसा नहीं है। सच कहूँ तो मैं हमारे भविष्य के बारे में हर वक़्त सोचता हूँ। बस मुझे यह समझ नहीं आया कि इसमें से कुछ भी ज़ुबान पर कैसे लाऊँ। मैं नहीं चाहता कि ऐसा लगे जैसे मैं ऐसे वादे कर रहा हूँ जो निभा नहीं पाऊँगा।"

"You don't have to have it all figured out," Cora says. "I'm not asking for a plan. I just need to know I'm not the only one thinking about this."

"तुम्हें सब कुछ तय करके रखने की ज़रूरत नहीं है," कोरा कहती है। "मैं कोई योजना नहीं माँग रही। मुझे बस यह जानना है कि इसके बारे में सोचने वाली मैं अकेली नहीं हूँ।"

Emil reaches across the table and takes her hand. "You're not. I've wanted to bring this up for weeks. I kept putting it off because I was worried I'd say the wrong thing."

एमिल मेज़ के पार हाथ बढ़ाकर उसका हाथ थाम लेता है। "तुम अकेली नहीं हो। मैं हफ़्तों से यह बात उठाना चाहता था। मैं इसे टालता रहा क्योंकि मुझे डर था कि कहीं ग़लत बात न कह दूँ।"

"You could have just said that," Cora says, half laughing, half relieved.

"तुम बस यही कह देते," कोरा कहती है, आधी हँसी और आधी राहत के साथ।

"I know. I should have." He pauses. "For what it's worth, when I picture five years from now, you're in it. I just hadn't said that part out loud before."

"मुझे पता है। मुझे कहना चाहिए था।" वह रुकता है। "जो भी हो, जब मैं पाँच साल बाद की कल्पना करता हूँ, तो उसमें तुम होती हो। बस यह हिस्सा मैंने पहले कभी ज़ोर से नहीं कहा था।"

Cora feels something in her chest loosen, a tension she hadn't fully noticed until it was gone. She doesn't need a ring or a date. She just needed to know they were imagining the same thing.

कोरा को अपनी छाती में कुछ ढीला होता महसूस होता है, एक तनाव जिसे उसने उसके ग़ायब होने तक पूरी तरह महसूस ही नहीं किया था। उसे अँगूठी या तारीख़ नहीं चाहिए। उसे बस यह जानना था कि वे दोनों एक ही चीज़ की कल्पना कर रहे हैं।

They finish dinner slower than usual, talking more openly than they have in months.

वे सामान्य से धीमे खाना ख़त्म करते हैं, और महीनों में जितना खुलकर बात की है, उससे ज़्यादा खुलकर बात करते हैं।
