The First Day of Pottery Class

Clio is fifteen years old. Today is her first pottery class at the art center.

Clio tiene quince años. Hoy es su primera clase de cerámica en el centro de arte.

She feels nervous. She walks through the door and doesn't know anyone in the room.

Se siente nerviosa. Entra por la puerta y no conoce a nadie en la sala.

Paz, the teacher, waves and points to an empty seat. "Welcome! Sit anywhere you like," she says.

Paz, la profesora, la saluda con la mano y señala un asiento vacío. «¡Bienvenida! Siéntate donde quieras», dice.

Clio sits down at a table with three other students. They all look busy already.

Clio se sienta en una mesa con otros tres estudiantes. Todos ya se ven ocupados.

"Is this your first time with clay?" a boy next to her asks. "Yes, it is," Clio says.

«¿Es tu primera vez con arcilla?», le pregunta un chico a su lado. «Sí, lo es», dice Clio.

"Don't worry, everyone starts somewhere," the boy says. "My name is Anton, by the way."

«No te preocupes, todos empiezan por algún lado», dice el chico. «Por cierto, me llamo Anton».

Paz shows the class how to shape a small bowl. "Start with a ball of clay," she says. "Press your thumbs into the middle."

Paz le muestra a la clase cómo formar un pequeño cuenco. «Empiecen con una bola de arcilla», dice. «Presionen los pulgares en el centro».

Clio tries it, but her bowl comes out lopsided. She looks at Anton's bowl, round and even.

Clio lo intenta, pero su cuenco sale torcido. Mira el cuenco de Anton, redondo y parejo.

"Mine looks bad," Clio says quietly. Paz walks over and looks at Clio's work.

«El mío se ve mal», dice Clio en voz baja. Paz se acerca y observa el trabajo de Clio.

"Actually, this is a great first try," Paz says. "Everyone's first bowl looks a little strange. That's normal."

«En realidad, es un gran primer intento», dice Paz. «El primer cuenco de todos se ve un poco raro. Es normal».

Clio feels calm again. She tries again, and her second bowl looks round and smooth.

Clio se siente tranquila de nuevo. Lo intenta otra vez, y su segundo cuenco sale redondo y liso.

By the end of class, Clio has three small bowls. Her bowls aren't perfect, but she feels proud.

Al final de la clase, Clio tiene tres cuencos pequeños. Sus cuencos no son perfectos, pero se siente orgullosa.
