Clio is fifteen years old. Today is her first pottery class at the art center.
Clio tem quinze anos. Hoje é a primeira aula de cerâmica dela no centro de artes.
She feels nervous. She walks through the door and doesn't know anyone in the room.
Ela se sente nervosa. Ela entra pela porta e não conhece ninguém na sala.
Paz, the teacher, waves and points to an empty seat. "Welcome! Sit anywhere you like," she says.
Paz, a professora, acena e aponta para uma cadeira vazia. "Bem-vinda! Sente onde quiser", ela diz.
Clio sits down at a table with three other students. They all look busy already.
Clio se senta em uma mesa com outros três alunos. Todos já parecem ocupados.
"Is this your first time with clay?" a boy next to her asks. "Yes, it is," Clio says.
"É a sua primeira vez com argila?", pergunta um menino ao lado dela. "Sim, é", diz Clio.
"Don't worry, everyone starts somewhere," the boy says. "My name is Anton, by the way."
"Não se preocupe, todo mundo começa de algum lugar", diz o menino. "Meu nome é Anton, a propósito."
Paz shows the class how to shape a small bowl. "Start with a ball of clay," she says. "Press your thumbs into the middle."
Paz mostra à turma como moldar uma tigela pequena. "Comecem com uma bola de argila", ela diz. "Pressionem os polegares no meio."
Clio tries it, but her bowl comes out lopsided. She looks at Anton's bowl, round and even.
Clio tenta, mas a tigela dela sai torta. Ela olha para a tigela de Anton, redonda e uniforme.
"Mine looks bad," Clio says quietly. Paz walks over and looks at Clio's work.
"A minha ficou feia", diz Clio baixinho. Paz se aproxima e olha o trabalho de Clio.
"Actually, this is a great first try," Paz says. "Everyone's first bowl looks a little strange. That's normal."
"Na verdade, essa é uma ótima primeira tentativa", diz Paz. "A primeira tigela de todo mundo fica um pouco estranha. Isso é normal."
Clio feels calm again. She tries again, and her second bowl looks round and smooth.
Clio se sente calma de novo. Ela tenta outra vez, e a segunda tigela sai redonda e lisa.
By the end of class, Clio has three small bowls. Her bowls aren't perfect, but she feels proud.
No fim da aula, Clio tem três tigelas pequenas. Suas tigelas não são perfeitas, mas ela se sente orgulhosa.
