Maria buys a new toaster at a shop. The shop is on Elm Street. She takes it home and opens the box. She puts a piece of bread inside. She presses the button down. Nothing happens. She waits and tries again. The toaster still does not work.
Maria compra una tostadora nueva en una tienda. La tienda está en la calle Elm. Se la lleva a casa y abre la caja. Pone un pedazo de pan adentro. Presiona el botón. No pasa nada. Espera y lo intenta otra vez. La tostadora todavía no funciona.
Maria checks her bag. She still has the receipt. She puts the toaster back in its box. She carries it back to the shop.
Maria revisa su bolsa. Todavía tiene el recibo. Pone la tostadora de vuelta en su caja. La lleva de regreso a la tienda.
"Hello," says the man at the counter. "How can I help you?"
«Hola», dice el hombre en el mostrador. «¿En qué puedo ayudarle?».
"Hi," says Maria. "This toaster does not work. I bought it yesterday."
«Hola», dice Maria. «Esta tostadora no funciona. La compré ayer».
"I'm sorry about that," he says. "Do you have your receipt?"
«Lo siento mucho», dice él. «¿Tiene su recibo?».
"Yes, I have it right here," Maria says.
«Sí, lo tengo aquí mismo», dice Maria.
The man looks at the receipt and nods. "Would you like a new toaster, or your money back?"
El hombre mira el recibo y asiente. «¿Quiere una tostadora nueva, o le devolvemos su dinero?».
Maria thinks for a moment. "A new toaster, please."
Maria piensa un momento. «Una tostadora nueva, por favor».
The man takes a new box from the shelf. "Here you are. Let's check it together."
El hombre toma una caja nueva del estante. «Aquí tiene. Revisémosla juntos».
He plugs it in at the counter. He puts in a piece of bread. He presses the button. A minute later, the bread pops up, warm and brown.
La conecta ahí mismo en el mostrador. Pone un pedazo de pan. Presiona el botón. Un minuto después, el pan salta, caliente y dorado.
"It works," Maria says.
«Funciona», dice Maria.
"Great," says the man. "Have a good day."
«Excelente», dice el hombre. «Que tenga un buen día».
Maria takes the new toaster home. She opens the box in the kitchen. She puts in two pieces of bread. She presses the button. She waits by the counter and watches the clock.
Maria se lleva la tostadora nueva a casa. Abre la caja en la cocina. Pone dos pedazos de pan. Presiona el botón. Espera junto al mostrador y observa el reloj.
