Maria buys a new toaster at a shop. The shop is on Elm Street. She takes it home and opens the box. She puts a piece of bread inside. She presses the button down. Nothing happens. She waits and tries again. The toaster still does not work.
玛丽亚在一家商店买了一台新烤面包机。商店在榆树街上。她把它带回家，打开盒子。她在里面放了一片面包。她把按钮按下去。什么也没发生。她等了一会儿，又试了一次。烤面包机还是不工作。
Maria checks her bag. She still has the receipt. She puts the toaster back in its box. She carries it back to the shop.
玛丽亚翻了翻包。她还留着收据。她把烤面包机放回盒子里，拿着它回到商店。
"Hello," says the man at the counter. "How can I help you?"
“你好，”柜台后的男人说，“有什么能帮您的吗？”
"Hi," says Maria. "This toaster does not work. I bought it yesterday."
“你好，”玛丽亚说，“这台烤面包机坏了。我昨天买的。”
"I'm sorry about that," he says. "Do you have your receipt?"
“很抱歉，”他说，“您带着收据吗？”
"Yes, I have it right here," Maria says.
“带着，就在这儿，”玛丽亚说。
The man looks at the receipt and nods. "Would you like a new toaster, or your money back?"
男人看了看收据，点点头。“您想换一台新的，还是退款？”
Maria thinks for a moment. "A new toaster, please."
玛丽亚想了一会儿。“请给我换一台新的。”
The man takes a new box from the shelf. "Here you are. Let's check it together."
男人从货架上拿下一个新盒子。“给您。我们一起检查一下。”
He plugs it in at the counter. He puts in a piece of bread. He presses the button. A minute later, the bread pops up, warm and brown.
他在柜台上接通电源，放进一片面包，按下按钮。一分钟后，面包弹了起来，又暖又焦黄。
"It works," Maria says.
“好用了，”玛丽亚说。
"Great," says the man. "Have a good day."
“太好了，”男人说，“祝您今天愉快。”
Maria takes the new toaster home. She opens the box in the kitchen. She puts in two pieces of bread. She presses the button. She waits by the counter and watches the clock.
玛丽亚把新烤面包机带回家。她在厨房里打开盒子，放进两片面包，按下按钮。她站在台子旁等着，看着钟。
