The Train That Stopped in a Field

Danae sits by the window on the afternoon train. She has a book and a small bag of nuts. Outside, the fields are green and quiet.

Danae está sentada junto à janela no trem da tarde. Ela tem um livro e um saquinho de castanhas. Lá fora, os campos são verdes e silenciosos.

Suddenly the train slows down and stops. It stops in the middle of a field. There is no town and no station, only cows and grass.

De repente, o trem diminui a velocidade e para. Para no meio de um campo. Não há cidade nem estação, só vacas e grama.

A voice comes from the speaker. "A tree is on the line," it says. "We need two hours to move it. We are sorry."

Uma voz sai do alto-falante. "Há uma árvore na linha", diz. "Precisamos de duas horas para removê-la. Pedimos desculpas."

Some people sigh. Others look at their phones. Danae eats a few nuts and looks around. Nobody has much food. The man across from her has one apple. A woman near the door has half a sandwich.

Algumas pessoas suspiram. Outras olham seus celulares. Danae come algumas castanhas e olha ao redor. Ninguém tem muita comida. O homem à sua frente tem uma maçã. Uma mulher perto da porta tem meio sanduíche.

"We will all be hungry soon," the man says.

"Daqui a pouco todos nós vamos ficar com fome", diz o homem.

"Maybe we can share," Danae says. She stands up and puts her nuts on the little table. "Let's put everything here."

"Talvez a gente possa dividir", diz Danae. Ela se levanta e coloca as castanhas na mesinha. "Vamos colocar tudo aqui."

The man puts down his apple. The woman brings her sandwich. A boy has a bag of grapes. A tall woman has bread and a big piece of cheese.

O homem coloca a maçã. A mulher traz o sanduíche. Um menino tem um saco de uvas. Uma mulher alta tem pão e um pedaço grande de queijo.

Then a man called Radek opens a box. Inside is a birthday cake. "It is for my sister," he says. "But the party is tomorrow. She will understand."

Então um homem chamado Radek abre uma caixa. Dentro há um bolo de aniversário. "É para a minha irmã", diz ele. "Mas a festa é amanhã. Ela vai entender."

Everyone laughs. Soon the table is full of food. People from other seats come to look. They bring more things: crackers, oranges, a bottle of juice.

Todos riem. Logo a mesa está cheia de comida. Pessoas de outros assentos vêm olhar. Elas trazem mais coisas: biscoitos salgados, laranjas, uma garrafa de suco.

Danae finds a knife in her bag. She cuts the cake into twelve pieces. She gives the first piece to the boy.

Danae encontra uma faca na bolsa. Ela corta o bolo em doze pedaços. Dá o primeiro pedaço ao menino.
