The Parrot That Learned the Wrong Word

Stellan's family has a gray parrot named Peanut. Peanut lives in a big cage in the living room. He repeats anything he hears.

A família de Stellan tem um papagaio cinza chamado Peanut. Peanut mora em uma gaiola grande na sala de estar. Ele repete tudo o que ouve.

One evening, Stellan's older sister Lila drops a plate in the kitchen. "Oh, great," she says loudly, in a flat, annoyed voice.

Numa noite, a irmã mais velha de Stellan, Lila, derruba um prato na cozinha. "Ah, ótimo", ela diz em voz alta, com um tom monótono e irritado.

Peanut listens closely from his cage. He tilts his head to one side.

Peanut escuta com atenção lá da gaiola. Ele inclina a cabeça para o lado.

The next morning, Peanut says it too. "Oh, great," he says, in the exact same flat voice. He says it again and again, all day long.

Na manhã seguinte, Peanut diz a mesma coisa. "Ah, ótimo", ele diz, com o mesmo tom monótono. Ele repete isso o dia inteiro, sem parar.

"Peanut, please stop," Stellan says, laughing a little.

"Peanut, por favor, para", diz Stellan, rindo um pouco.

By the weekend, Peanut says the phrase often. When his food bowl is empty, he says it. When the door closes too loudly, he says it too.

No fim de semana, Peanut já diz a frase com frequência. Quando o pote de comida está vazio, ele diz isso. Quando a porta fecha com muito barulho, ele também diz isso.

"This is a problem," Lila says. "Grandma visits tomorrow, and she hates that phrase."

"Isso é um problema", diz Lila. "Amanhã a vovó vem nos visitar, e ela odeia essa frase."

Stellan looks at Peanut and thinks for a minute. "We need to teach him something new," he says. "Something he'll want to say more."

Stellan olha para Peanut e pensa por um instante. "A gente precisa ensinar uma coisa nova pra ele", ele diz. "Alguma coisa que ele vai querer dizer mais."

They spend the evening near the cage. When Peanut stays quiet, they give him a piece of apple. When he says a new word, they say kind words to him.

Eles passam a noite perto da gaiola. Quando Peanut fica quieto, eles dão um pedaço de maçã para ele. Quando ele diz uma palavra nova, eles falam coisas gentis com ele.

"Good bird!" Stellan says again and again, in a happy, bright voice.

"Bom passarinho!", Stellan repete várias vezes, com uma voz alegre e animada.

By bedtime, Peanut starts to copy the new phrase instead. "Good bird! Good bird!" he squawks proudly from his perch.

Na hora de dormir, Peanut começa a copiar a nova frase. "Bom passarinho! Bom passarinho!", ele grasna, orgulhoso, do seu poleiro.

The next day, Grandma arrives and walks straight to the cage.

No dia seguinte, a vovó chega e vai direto até a gaiola.

"Good bird!" Peanut announces. Grandma laughs and claps her hands.

"Bom passarinho!", anuncia Peanut. A vovó ri e bate palmas.
