Akira loved to bake bread. He kept a jar of sourdough starter in his kitchen. It was a mix of flour and water that lived and grew. He fed it every day. He was proud of it.
Akira adorava assar pão. Ele mantinha um pote de fermento natural na cozinha. Era uma mistura de farinha e água que vivia e crescia. Ele a alimentava todo dia. Tinha orgulho dela.
Then he went on a trip for two weeks. He forgot the jar. It stayed at the back of the fridge.
Então fez uma viagem de duas semanas. Esqueceu o pote. Ele ficou no fundo da geladeira.
When Akira came home, he opened the jar. The starter was grey. A dark liquid sat on top, and it smelled sharp and sour.
Quando Akira voltou para casa, abriu o pote. O fermento estava cinza. Um líquido escuro cobria a superfície, e o cheiro era forte e azedo.
"It is dead," he said. He felt very sad.
"Morreu", disse ele. Sentiu-se muito triste.
He called his friend, a baker. "Don't throw it away," she said. "Come to my shop."
Ele ligou para uma amiga, que era padeira. "Não jogue fora", disse ela. "Venha à minha padaria."
At the shop, she showed him what to do. "First, pour off the dark liquid," she said. "Take two spoons of starter. Put them in a clean jar. Add flour and warm water. Do this twice a day for three days."
Na padaria, ela mostrou o que fazer. "Primeiro, tire o líquido escuro", disse ela. "Pegue duas colheres de fermento. Ponha num pote limpo. Acrescente farinha e água morna. Faça isso duas vezes por dia, durante três dias."
On the first day, nothing happened. On the second day, Akira saw a few small bubbles. On the third day, the jar was full of bubbles. It smelled sweet, like fruit.
No primeiro dia, nada aconteceu. No segundo dia, Akira viu algumas bolhas pequenas. No terceiro dia, o pote estava cheio de bolhas. O cheiro era doce, de fruta.
On Saturday, he made a loaf. The crust was brown and crunchy, and the inside was soft. He ate three pieces with butter.
No sábado, ele assou um pão. A casca era marrom e crocante, e o miolo, macio. Ele comeu três fatias com manteiga.
Then he took a pen and wrote "STARTER!" on a note. He stuck it on the door of his suitcase.
Depois pegou uma caneta e escreveu "FERMENTO!" num bilhete. Colou na porta da mala.
