Akira loved to bake bread. He kept a jar of sourdough starter in his kitchen. It was a mix of flour and water that lived and grew. He fed it every day. He was proud of it.
A Akira le encantaba hacer pan. Tenía en su cocina un frasco de masa madre. Era una mezcla de harina y agua que vivía y crecía. La alimentaba todos los días. Estaba orgulloso de ella.
Then he went on a trip for two weeks. He forgot the jar. It stayed at the back of the fridge.
Luego se fue de viaje por dos semanas. Olvidó el frasco. Se quedó al fondo del refrigerador.
When Akira came home, he opened the jar. The starter was grey. A dark liquid sat on top, and it smelled sharp and sour.
Cuando Akira volvió a casa, abrió el frasco. La masa madre estaba gris. Un líquido oscuro cubría la superficie, y olía fuerte y agrio.
"It is dead," he said. He felt very sad.
«Está muerta», dijo. Se sintió muy triste.
He called his friend, a baker. "Don't throw it away," she said. "Come to my shop."

At the shop, she showed him what to do. "First, pour off the dark liquid," she said. "Take two spoons of starter. Put them in a clean jar. Add flour and warm water. Do this twice a day for three days."
En la tienda, ella le mostró qué hacer. «Primero, saca el líquido oscuro», dijo. «Toma dos cucharadas de masa madre. Ponlas en un frasco limpio. Agrega harina y agua tibia. Haz esto dos veces al día durante tres días».
On the first day, nothing happened. On the second day, Akira saw a few small bubbles. On the third day, the jar was full of bubbles. It smelled sweet, like fruit.
El primer día no pasó nada. El segundo día, Akira vio unas pocas burbujas pequeñas. El tercer día, el frasco estaba lleno de burbujas. Olía dulce, como a fruta.
On Saturday, he made a loaf. The crust was brown and crunchy, and the inside was soft. He ate three pieces with butter.
El sábado hizo un pan. La corteza era marrón y crujiente, y por dentro era suave. Comió tres rebanadas con mantequilla.
Then he took a pen and wrote "STARTER!" on a note. He stuck it on the door of his suitcase.
