The Flat Tire in the Mountains

Dario and Naomi had been driving for almost three hours. They were winding up through the mountains toward a cabin they'd rented for the weekend. The road grew narrower with every mile, and cell phone signal had disappeared almost an hour earlier.

Dario e Naomi já estavam dirigindo havia quase três horas. Subiam pela estrada sinuosa das montanhas em direção a uma cabana que tinham alugado para o fim de semana. A estrada ficava mais estreita a cada quilômetro, e o sinal do celular tinha desaparecido quase uma hora antes.

Just past a sharp curve, they heard a loud pop, followed by a strange thumping sound. Dario pulled over carefully onto a small patch of gravel at the edge of the road.

Logo depois de uma curva fechada, eles ouviram um estouro alto, seguido de um barulho estranho de batida. Dario parou o carro com cuidado numa pequena faixa de cascalho na beira da estrada.

"That doesn't sound good," Naomi said, already unbuckling her seatbelt.

"Isso não parece nada bom", disse Naomi, já desafivelando o cinto de segurança.

They got out and found the back-left tire completely flat, torn open by something sharp on the road. Neither of them had ever changed a tire alone. They'd both watched videos about it at some point.

Eles saíram do carro e encontraram o pneu traseiro esquerdo completamente vazio, rasgado por algo afiado na estrada. Nenhum dos dois jamais tinha trocado um pneu sozinho. Os dois já tinham assistido vídeos sobre isso em algum momento.

"We should have practiced this before we left," Dario admitted, opening the trunk to look for the spare.

"A gente devia ter praticado isso antes de sair", admitiu Dario, abrindo o porta-malas para procurar o estepe.

Fortunately, the car had a full-size spare and a tool kit tucked beneath the trunk floor. Naomi pulled out her phone, hoping to find instructions, but there was no signal at all. They would have to figure it out together, using only the diagrams printed on the jack itself.

Felizmente, o carro tinha um estepe de tamanho normal e um kit de ferramentas guardado sob o piso do porta-malas. Naomi pegou o celular, na esperança de encontrar instruções, mas não havia sinal nenhum. Eles teriam que descobrir sozinhos, usando apenas os desenhos impressos no próprio macaco.

It took them almost forty minutes, since neither wanted to make a mistake that could leave them stranded. Dario held the jack steady while Naomi loosened the bolts. They switched roles whenever one of their arms got tired. By the time the spare was finally in place, both of their hands were covered in dust.

Levou quase quarenta minutos, já que nenhum dos dois queria cometer um erro que os deixasse presos ali. Dario segurou o macaco firme enquanto Naomi soltava os parafusos. Eles trocavam de função sempre que um dos braços cansava. Quando o estepe finalmente ficou no lugar, as mãos dos dois estavam cobertas de poeira.

"We actually did it," Naomi said, wiping her forehead and grinning with relief.

"A gente conseguiu mesmo", disse Naomi, limpando a testa e sorrindo, aliviada.

"Next time, I'm definitely watching one of those videos again before we leave the house," Dario replied. He laughed at how nervous they'd both been.

"Da próxima vez, eu definitivamente vou assistir a um daqueles vídeos de novo antes de sairmos de casa", respondeu Dario. Ele riu de como os dois tinham ficado nervosos.

They drove the rest of the way slowly, keeping an eye on the spare tire. They reached the cabin just as the sun began to set behind the peaks.

Eles dirigiram o resto do caminho devagar, de olho no estepe. Chegaram à cabana bem quando o sol começava a se pôr atrás dos picos.
