The Elevator Avoidance Plan

Derek has a plan for avoiding his ex-girlfriend Renata in the elevator. He has been perfecting it for three weeks.

Derek tem um plano para evitar a ex-namorada, Renata, no elevador. Ele vem aperfeiçoando esse plano há três semanas.

Step one: check the lobby before walking in. Step two: if she's anywhere near the elevator bank, take the stairs instead. That means all eleven flights, no matter how unpleasant that sounds at eight in the morning. Step three: if he's already in the elevator and she gets on, stare at his phone. Keep staring until his floor arrives.

Passo um: checar o saguão antes de entrar. Passo dois: se ela estiver perto dos elevadores, ir pela escada em vez disso. It has worked, more or less, until today.

This morning, Derek checks the lobby carefully and sees no sign of Renata. He steps into the elevator feeling confident. The doors are almost closed when a hand reaches through the gap, and the doors slide back open.

Nesta manhã, Derek checa o saguão com cuidado e não vê sinal de Renata. Ele entra no elevador se sentindo confiante. As portas estão quase se fechando quando uma mão passa pela fresta, e as portas voltam a se abrir.

It's Renata.

É a Renata.

Derek's stomach drops. He immediately pulls out his phone and stares at it with real intensity. He looks like he's reading something extremely important. The screen is actually just his lock screen.

O estômago de Derek afunda. Ele imediatamente pega o celular e fica olhando para ele com intensidade de verdade. Parece que está lendo algo extremamente importante. Na verdade, a tela é só a tela de bloqueio.

"Derek," Renata says, sounding amused. "You can put the phone down. I already know it's you."

"Derek", diz Renata, parecendo achar graça. "Pode guardar o celular. Já sei que é você."

"I'm just… checking something," he says, not looking up.

"Eu só… estou checando uma coisa", ele diz, sem levantar os olhos.

"For three weeks?" she asks. "Because I've noticed you taking the stairs every single morning, even in that ridiculous heat last week."

"Por três semanas?", ela pergunta. "Porque reparei que você tem subido de escada todas as manhãs, até naquele calor ridículo da semana passada."

Derek finally looks up, caught. "You noticed that?"

Derek finalmente levanta os olhos, pego. "Você reparou nisso?"

"Everyone in the building has noticed that. Security asked me if you were training for something."

"Todo mundo no prédio reparou. A segurança até me perguntou se você estava treinando para alguma coisa."

He laughs despite himself, mostly out of embarrassment. "Okay. I was avoiding you. It felt easier than an awkward conversation in a small metal box."

Ele ri sem querer, principalmente de vergonha. "Tá bom. Eu estava evitando você. Parecia mais fácil do que uma conversa estranha dentro de uma caixinha de metal."

"I figured," Renata says. "For what it's worth, I've been doing the same thing on the third floor. I hide behind the vending machine whenever I see you coming."

"Eu imaginei", diz Renata. "Só para constar, eu tenho feito a mesma coisa no terceiro andar. Eu me escondo atrás da máquina de lanches sempre que vejo você chegando."

They stand there for a second, both a little stunned. They've each put real effort into avoiding a five-second interaction.

Os dois ficam parados por um instante, meio atônitos. Cada um se esforçou de verdade para evitar uma interação de cinco segundos.

"This is objectively ridiculous," Derek says.

"Isso é objetivamente ridículo", diz Derek.

"Completely ridiculous," Renata agrees. "Want to just… take the elevator normally from now on?"

"Completamente ridículo", concorda Renata. "Quer só… pegar o elevador normalmente a partir de agora?"

"Deal," Derek says. "Though I might miss the stairs. My legs have never looked better."

"Combinado", diz Derek. "Embora eu talvez sinta falta das escadas. Minhas pernas nunca estiveram tão boas."

Renata laughs. For the first time in three weeks, they ride up together without staring at their phones.

Renata ri. Pela primeira vez em três semanas, eles sobem juntos sem ficar olhando para os celulares.
