The Climbing Wall

Manon had never liked heights. She didn't even feel comfortable on a tall stepladder. So when her friend Sanna invited her to a party at a climbing gym, Manon almost said no.

Manon nunca gostou de altura. Nem se sentia à vontade numa escada alta. Então, quando a amiga Sanna a convidou para uma festa numa academia de escalada, Manon quase disse não.

"You can just watch," Sanna said. "But I would really like you to try."

"Você pode só assistir", disse Sanna. "Mas eu gostaria muito que você tentasse."

Manon thought about it all week. She didn't want to ruin her friend's day. She didn't want to be the only one sitting on a bench. On Saturday, she put on rented shoes and a harness that felt too tight around her legs.

Manon pensou nisso a semana inteira. Não queria estragar o dia da amiga. Não queria ser a única sentada num banco. No sábado, calçou sapatilhas alugadas e vestiu um cinto de segurança que parecia apertado demais nas pernas.

The wall was twelve meters tall. The other guests climbed it as if it were a staircase. Manon went up slowly, one hand and one foot at a time. For the first few minutes, it was easier than she had expected.

A parede tinha doze metros de altura. Os outros convidados a escalavam como se fosse uma escada. Manon subiu devagar, uma mão e um pé de cada vez. Nos primeiros minutos, foi mais fácil do que esperava.

Then she looked down. The floor seemed very far away, and her friends looked tiny. Her fingers began to shake, and her legs stopped working. She was halfway up the wall, and she couldn't move.

Então olhou para baixo. O chão parecia muito longe, e os amigos pareciam minúsculos. Os dedos começaram a tremer, e as pernas pararam de obedecer. Ela estava na metade da parede e não conseguia se mexer.

"I want to come down," she called. Her voice sounded thin and strange.

"Quero descer", gritou. A voz soou fina e estranha.

"That's fine," the instructor called back from below. "You can come down whenever you like. But first, tell me something. Can you see the yellow hold above your right hand?"

"Tudo bem", gritou de volta o instrutor lá de baixo. "Você pode descer quando quiser. Mas primeiro me diga uma coisa. Você consegue ver a agarra amarela acima da sua mão direita?"

"Yes."

"Sim."

"Good. Forget the rest of the wall. Don't look at the top, and don't look at the floor. Just put your hand on the yellow one."

"Ótimo. Esqueça o resto da parede. Não olhe para o topo nem para o chão. Só ponha a mão na amarela."

It sounded too small to matter, but Manon did it. Her hand closed around the plastic, and it felt solid.

Parecia pequeno demais para fazer diferença, mas Manon fez. A mão se fechou em volta do plástico, e ele pareceu firme.

"Great. Now find the next hold. Only the next one."

"Excelente. Agora encontre a próxima agarra. Só a próxima."

She did it again, and then again. Each time, the instructor gave her only one job. She stopped counting how high she was. After a while, she realized that she was breathing normally.

Ela fez de novo, e de novo. Cada vez, o instrutor lhe dava só uma tarefa. Ela parou de contar a que altura estava. Depois de um tempo, percebeu que respirava normalmente.

Then her hand touched a big red hold, and there was nowhere left to go. She had reached the top.

Então a mão tocou uma grande agarra vermelha, e não havia mais para onde ir. Ela tinha chegado ao topo.

She hung there for a moment and kept her eyes on the wall in front of her nose. She didn't look down. The rope lowered her slowly, and she kept looking straight ahead until her shoes touched the floor.

Ficou pendurada ali por um momento, com os olhos na parede diante do nariz. Não olhou para baixo. A corda a desceu devagar, e ela continuou olhando em frente até as sapatilhas tocarem o chão.

Only then did she turn around and look up. The wall was enormous.

Só então se virou e olhou para cima. A parede era enorme.

"Did I really climb that?" she asked.

"Eu realmente escalei aquilo?", perguntou.

"Every single hold," Sanna said, and handed her a slice of cake.

"Todas as agarras", disse Sanna, e lhe estendeu uma fatia de bolo.
