The Note in Her Locker

Jonah and Piper have been best friends since sixth grade, but lately something has felt different. Jonah first noticed it in October, when Piper laughed at something he said. He suddenly couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the day.

Jonah e Piper são melhores amigos desde a sexta série, mas ultimamente algo tem parecido diferente. Jonah percebeu isso pela primeira vez em outubro, quando Piper riu de algo que ele disse. De repente, ele não conseguiu parar de pensar naquilo pelo resto do dia.

He hasn't told anyone, not even his older brother, because saying it out loud would make it real. And if it's real, he might ruin the one friendship that has mattered most to him for years.

Ele não contou para ninguém, nem para o irmão mais velho, porque dizer isso em voz alta tornaria aquilo real. E se for real, ele pode acabar destruindo a única amizade que mais importou para ele durante anos.

Everything gets harder in March, when Piper mentions that her family is moving to another state this summer. She says it quickly, almost like she's trying to get the sentence over with.

Tudo fica mais difícil em março, quando Piper conta que a família dela vai se mudar para outro estado neste verão. Ela diz isso rapidamente, quase como se estivesse tentando terminar a frase o quanto antes.

"That's, like, three months away," Jonah says, trying to sound calm.

"Isso é, tipo, daqui a três meses", diz Jonah, tentando parecer calmo.

"I know," Piper says. "I keep forgetting it's actually happening."

"Eu sei", diz Piper. "Eu continuo esquecendo que isso está realmente acontecendo."

That night, Jonah can't stop thinking about all the things he has never said to her. If he says nothing, she'll leave without ever knowing how he feels. He isn't sure he can live with that kind of regret. But if he tells her and she doesn't feel the same way, it could get awkward fast.

Naquela noite, Jonah não consegue parar de pensar em todas as coisas que nunca disse a ela. Se ele não disser nada, ela vai embora sem nunca saber o que ele sente. Ele não tem certeza se consegue conviver com esse tipo de arrependimento. Mas se ele contar e ela não sentir o mesmo, tudo pode ficar estranho muito rápido.

He goes back and forth for almost a week. He writes and rewrites the same short note in his notebook. Finally, on a Thursday afternoon, he decides that saying something honest matters more than staying comfortable.

Ele fica indeciso por quase uma semana. Ele escreve e reescreve o mesmo bilhete curto em seu caderno. Finalmente, numa tarde de quinta-feira, ele decide que dizer algo sincero importa mais do que ficar confortável.

He doesn't say it out loud, not yet. Instead, he folds the note carefully and slides it through the vents of Piper's locker. He does it just before the last bell rings. It just says: "You've mattered more to me than any other friend I've ever had. I don't want you to leave without knowing that. Can we talk after school?"

Ele não diz isso em voz alta, ainda não. Em vez disso, ele dobra o bilhete com cuidado e o desliza pelas frestas do armário de Piper. Ele faz isso pouco antes de o último sinal tocar. O bilhete diz apenas: "Você importou mais para mim do que qualquer outro amigo que eu já tive. Eu não quero que você vá embora sem saber disso. Podemos conversar depois da aula?"

He spends the rest of the day barely listening in class. He watches the clock and rehearses what he might say, if she actually shows up.

Ele passa o resto do dia mal prestando atenção nas aulas. Ele fica olhando o relógio e ensaiando o que talvez vá dizer, caso ela realmente apareça.

At three o'clock, he waits by the bike racks, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. A few minutes later, he sees Piper walking toward him, the folded note held carefully in one hand.

Às três horas, ele espera perto do bicicletário, com as mãos enfiadas fundo nos bolsos. Alguns minutos depois, ele vê Piper caminhando em sua direção, com o bilhete dobrado seguro com cuidado em uma das mãos.
