The Car That Wouldn't Start

Derek wakes up early and gets ready for work. He grabs his coffee and walks out to his car. He turns the key, but nothing happens.

Derek acorda cedo e se arruma para o trabalho. Ele pega o café e sai até o carro. Ele gira a chave, mas nada acontece.

He tries again. The engine makes a strange clicking sound, but it does not start. Derek looks at his watch. He has thirty minutes before his meeting.

Ele tenta de novo. O motor faz um clique estranho, mas não liga. Derek olha o relógio. Faltam trinta minutos para a reunião dele.

"Not today," he says to himself. He gets out of the car and closes the door.

"Não hoje", ele diz para si mesmo. Ele sai do carro e fecha a porta.

Derek checks the bus schedule on his phone. A bus stops near his house every fifteen minutes. He grabs his bag and walks quickly to the bus stop.

Derek confere o horário do ônibus no celular. Um ônibus passa perto da casa dele a cada quinze minutos. Ele pega a mochila e caminha rápido até o ponto de ônibus.

At the stop, a few other people wait too. A woman with a big umbrella smiles at him. "Car trouble?" she asks.

No ponto, algumas outras pessoas também esperam. Uma mulher com um guarda-chuva grande sorri para ele. "Problema no carro?", ela pergunta.

"Yes," Derek says. "It just will not start."

"Sim", diz Derek. "Ele simplesmente não quer ligar."

"That happened to me last winter," she says. "It's always at the worst time."

"Isso aconteceu comigo no inverno passado", ela diz. "É sempre na pior hora."

The bus arrives, and Derek gets on. He finds a seat by the window. He watches the city go by. He checks the time again. He still has twenty minutes.

O ônibus chega, e Derek entra. Ele encontra um assento perto da janela. Ele observa a cidade passar. Ele confere a hora de novo. Ainda faltam vinte minutos.

The bus stops two blocks from his office. Derek steps off and walks fast down the street. He reaches the building five minutes early.

O ônibus para a duas quadras do escritório dele. Derek desce e caminha rápido pela rua. Ele chega ao prédio cinco minutos adiantado.

His coworker looks up. "You're here early today," she says.

A colega de trabalho dele levanta os olhos. "Você chegou cedo hoje", ela diz.

"Not exactly," Derek says with a small smile. "My car did not want to start today."

"Nem tanto", diz Derek com um pequeno sorriso. "Meu carro não quis ligar hoje."

He sits down at his desk and turns on his computer. The meeting is about to begin. He arrived right on time.

Ele se senta na mesa e liga o computador. A reunião está prestes a começar. Ele chegou bem na hora.
