The Unexplained Charge

Cyrus checks his bank account every Sunday morning. He looks through each charge from the week. One charge catches his eye.

Cyrus memeriksa rekening banknya setiap Minggu pagi. Ia menelusuri setiap tagihan minggu itu. Satu tagihan menarik perhatiannya.

It reads "Monthly Service - $14.99." Cyrus does not remember this charge. He does not remember signing up for anything.

Tertulis "Layanan Bulanan - $14,99." Cyrus tidak ingat tagihan ini. Ia tidak ingat pernah mendaftar untuk apa pun.

He scrolls back through older statements. The same charge appears three months in a row. Cyrus feels puzzled and a little worried.

Ia menggulir ke belakang melalui laporan-laporan yang lebih lama. Tagihan yang sama muncul tiga bulan berturut-turut. Cyrus merasa bingung dan sedikit khawatir.

He calls the number listed next to the charge. A recorded voice answers the call. It asks him to enter his account number.

Ia menelepon nomor yang tercantum di samping tagihan itu. Suara rekaman menjawab panggilannya. Suara itu memintanya memasukkan nomor rekeningnya.

After a short wait, a person answers. "I see a charge I don't recognize," Cyrus says. "Can you tell me what it is?"

Setelah menunggu sebentar, seorang petugas menjawab. "Saya melihat tagihan yang tidak saya kenali," kata Cyrus. "Bisakah Anda memberi tahu apa itu?"

The worker checks his account. "This is a video app subscription," she says. "You signed up for a free trial in June."

Petugas itu memeriksa rekeningnya. "Ini langganan aplikasi video," katanya. "Anda mendaftar untuk uji coba gratis pada bulan Juni."

Cyrus thinks back to June. He remembers a free trial for a movie night. He forgot to cancel it afterward.

Cyrus mengingat kembali bulan Juni. Ia ingat uji coba gratis untuk malam menonton film. Ia lupa membatalkannya setelah itu.

"I only wanted the free week," Cyrus explains. "I simply forgot," he adds.

"Saya hanya menginginkan minggu gratisnya," jelas Cyrus. "Saya benar-benar lupa," tambahnya.

"I can cancel it now," the worker offers. "Do you want a refund for last month?"

"Saya bisa membatalkannya sekarang," petugas itu menawarkan. "Apakah Anda ingin pengembalian dana untuk bulan lalu?"

"Yes, please," Cyrus says. The worker cancels the subscription right away. She adds fourteen dollars back to his account.

"Ya, tolong," kata Cyrus. Petugas itu langsung membatalkan langganannya. Ia menambahkan empat belas dolar kembali ke rekeningnya.

Cyrus thanks her twice and checks his other charges. Nothing else looks strange this time.

Cyrus berterima kasih dua kali dan memeriksa tagihan lainnya. Kali ini tidak ada yang tampak janggal.

He hangs up and writes a note. "Cancel free trials right away," it says. He puts the note by his computer.

Ia menutup telepon dan menulis sebuah catatan. "Batalkan uji coba gratis segera," bunyinya. Ia menaruh catatan itu di dekat komputernya.
