The Cash Drawer Is Short

Rafael worked at the shop for two years. He always closes carefully every night. Tonight felt different from the start.

Rafael sudah bekerja di toko itu selama dua tahun. Ia selalu menutup toko dengan hati-hati setiap malam. Malam ini terasa berbeda sejak awal.

Rafael counted the cash drawer at closing time. The number was five dollars short. He counted it a second time.

Rafael menghitung uang di laci kasir saat tutup. Jumlahnya kurang lima dolar. Ia menghitungnya lagi untuk kedua kalinya.

The number stayed the same. Rafael felt worried. He did not want to blame anyone.

Jumlahnya tetap sama. Rafael merasa cemas. Ia tidak ingin menyalahkan siapa pun.

He opened the day's receipts on the screen. He checked each sale one by one. Most transactions matched perfectly.

Ia membuka struk penjualan hari itu di layar. Ia memeriksa setiap penjualan satu per satu. Sebagian besar transaksi cocok dengan sempurna.

Then he found something strange. One return appeared twice on the list. The same shirt, the same time, the same price.

Lalu ia menemukan sesuatu yang aneh. Satu pengembalian barang muncul dua kali di daftar. Kemejanya sama, waktunya sama, harganya sama.

Rafael checked the return slips in the drawer. Only one paper return slip sat there. Somebody entered it twice by mistake.

Rafael memeriksa slip pengembalian di laci. Hanya ada satu slip pengembalian kertas di sana. Seseorang memasukkannya dua kali karena kesalahan.

He called his manager over to the counter. "I found the problem," Rafael said. "A return got entered two times."

Ia memanggil manajernya ke meja kasir. "Saya menemukan masalahnya," kata Rafael. "Satu pengembalian barang dimasukkan dua kali."

His manager checked the screen carefully. "You're right," she said. "That explains the missing five dollars."

Manajernya memeriksa layar dengan teliti. "Kamu benar," katanya. "Itu menjelaskan kenapa lima dolar itu hilang."

She fixed the mistake and printed a new report. "Great job finding this," she said. Rafael felt relieved and locked the register.

Ia memperbaiki kesalahan itu dan mencetak laporan baru. "Kerja bagus bisa menemukan ini," katanya. Rafael merasa lega dan mengunci mesin kasir.

He walked out to his car and smiled.

Ia berjalan keluar ke mobilnya dan tersenyum.
