Every morning, Dahlia stopped at the same coffee shop before work. She always ordered a small tea with honey. She sat at the corner table.
हर सुबह डालिया काम पर जाने से पहले उसी कॉफ़ी शॉप पर रुकती थी। वह हमेशा शहद वाली एक छोटी चाय मँगवाती थी। वह कोने की मेज़ पर बैठती थी।
A man came in most mornings too. He always ordered the same strange drink. It was coffee with a little cinnamon and no sugar. He usually sat near the window.
एक आदमी भी ज़्यादातर सुबहों में आता था। वह हमेशा वही अजीब-सा पेय मँगवाता था। वह थोड़ी दालचीनी वाली और बिना चीनी की कॉफ़ी थी। वह आमतौर पर खिड़की के पास बैठता था।
For weeks, they nodded at each other but never spoke.
हफ़्तों तक वे एक-दूसरे को सिर हिलाकर अभिवादन करते रहे, पर कभी बात नहीं की।
One rainy Tuesday, the corner table was taken. Dahlia looked around. The only free seat was across from the man by the window.
एक बारिश वाले मंगलवार को कोने की मेज़ भरी हुई थी। डालिया ने चारों ओर देखा। खिड़की के पास उस आदमी के सामने की सीट ही ख़ाली थी।
"Is this seat free?" she asked.
"क्या यह सीट ख़ाली है?" उसने पूछा।
"Yes, please sit," he said. He smiled and moved his bag off the chair. "I'm Zane."
"हाँ, ज़रूर बैठिए," उसने कहा। वह मुस्कुराया और कुर्सी से अपना बैग हटा लिया। "मैं ज़ेन हूँ।"
"Dahlia," she said. She sat down and looked at his cup. "Coffee with cinnamon, right? I noticed it before."
"डालिया," उसने कहा। वह बैठ गई और उसके कप की ओर देखा। "दालचीनी वाली कॉफ़ी, है न? मैंने पहले भी देखा है।"
Zane laughed. "And you always get tea with honey," he said. "I noticed too."
ज़ेन हँस पड़ा। "और आप हमेशा शहद वाली चाय लेती हैं," उसने कहा। "मैंने भी देखा है।"
They talked for twenty minutes about small, ordinary things.
उन्होंने बीस मिनट तक छोटी-छोटी, आम बातों पर बात की।
When it was time to go, Zane asked, "Same time tomorrow?"
जाने का समय हुआ तो ज़ेन ने पूछा, "कल इसी समय?"
"Same table, if it's free," Dahlia said with a smile.
"वही मेज़, अगर ख़ाली हुई," डालिया ने मुस्कुराकर कहा।
The next morning, the corner table sat empty. Dahlia walked past it anyway. She sat by the window instead.
