The Old Profile Photo

Leopold arrived at the restaurant ten minutes early and chose a table near the window. He had been looking forward to this date all week. Esra's profile photo showed a woman with long dark hair, a red coat and a huge smile. According to her profile, she loved hiking and bad jokes. He had read it three times.

लियोपोल्ड रेस्तरां में दस मिनट पहले पहुँच गया और उसने खिड़की के पास की एक मेज़ चुनी। वह पूरे हफ़्ते से इस डेट का इंतज़ार कर रहा था। एसरा की प्रोफ़ाइल फ़ोटो में लंबे काले बालों वाली एक औरत थी, लाल कोट में, और चेहरे पर बड़ी-सी मुस्कान। उसकी प्रोफ़ाइल के अनुसार उसे हाइकिंग और बेकार चुटकुले पसंद थे। लियोपोल्ड ने उसे तीन बार पढ़ा था।

At exactly seven o'clock, a woman with short, grey-streaked hair and glasses stopped beside his table. "Leopold?" she asked. "Hi. I'm Esra."

ठीक सात बजे, छोटे, सफ़ेदी लिए बालों और चश्मे वाली एक औरत उसकी मेज़ के पास आकर रुकी। "लियोपोल्ड?" उसने पूछा। "हाय। मैं एसरा हूँ।"

He stood up too quickly and knocked over his water. For a second he could only stare. The woman in the photo had looked about thirty, and this woman was clearly past forty. Leopold felt a hot, annoyed feeling rise in his chest. Why hadn't she told him? If she had been honest, he would have understood.

वह जल्दबाज़ी में खड़ा हुआ और उसका पानी गिरा बैठा। एक पल के लिए वह बस देखता रह गया। फ़ोटो वाली औरत लगभग तीस साल की लगती थी, और यह औरत साफ़ तौर पर चालीस के पार थी। लियोपोल्ड के सीने में एक गर्म, खीझ भरा एहसास उठा। उसने उसे बताया क्यों नहीं? अगर वह ईमानदार होती, तो वह समझ जाता।

They sat down. The conversation was polite but stiff. He kept comparing her face with the picture in his head, and she noticed. After the soup arrived, she put down her spoon.

वे बैठ गए। बातचीत शिष्ट थी, पर खिंची-खिंची। वह बार-बार उसके चेहरे को अपने दिमाग़ में बसी तस्वीर से मिलाता रहा, और उसने यह भाँप लिया। सूप आने के बाद उसने अपना चम्मच नीचे रख दिया।

"Let me guess," Esra said calmly. "The photo is a bit old."

"मैं अंदाज़ा लगाती हूँ," एसरा ने शांति से कहा। "फ़ोटो थोड़ी पुरानी है।"

"A bit?" Leopold began, and then he stopped. His own profile photo had been taken at his cousin's wedding, eleven years ago. In it, he had thick brown hair and no glasses. Tonight he was wearing a hat to hide his bald patch.

"थोड़ी?" लियोपोल्ड ने कहना शुरू किया, और फिर वह रुक गया। उसकी अपनी प्रोफ़ाइल फ़ोटो उसके चचेरे भाई की शादी में ली गई थी, ग्यारह साल पहले। उसमें उसके घने भूरे बाल थे और चश्मा नहीं था। आज रात वह अपनी गंजी जगह छिपाने के लिए टोपी पहने हुए था।

"Ten years, I think," she said. "I never found a better one. I hate being photographed."

"दस साल पुरानी है, मेरे ख़याल से," उसने कहा। "मुझे कभी कोई बेहतर फ़ोटो मिली ही नहीं। मुझे फ़ोटो खिंचवाना पसंद नहीं।"

Leopold slowly took off his hat. "Mine is eleven years old," he said. "I should have told you first."

लियोपोल्ड ने धीरे से अपनी टोपी उतार दी। "मेरी ग्यारह साल पुरानी है," उसने कहा। "यह मुझे पहले बता देना चाहिए था।"

Esra looked at his head, and then she started to laugh, and so did he. They laughed until the waiter came to ask whether everything was all right.

एसरा ने उसके सिर की ओर देखा, और फिर वह हँसने लगी, और वह भी हँस पड़ा। वे तब तक हँसते रहे जब तक वेटर यह पूछने नहीं आ गया कि सब ठीक तो है।

"Everything is great," Esra said. "We are just two very old pictures having dinner."

"सब बढ़िया है," एसरा ने कहा। "हम बस दो बहुत पुरानी तस्वीरें हैं जो साथ खाना खा रही हैं।"

After dessert, they asked the waiter to take a photo of them together. The hat sat on a chair beside the table. It was not a perfect picture, but it was true. "Send it to me," Leopold said, "and tell me more about the hiking."

मिठाई के बाद उन्होंने वेटर से अपनी साथ की एक फ़ोटो खींचने को कहा। टोपी मेज़ के पास रखी कुर्सी पर पड़ी थी। वह एक आदर्श तस्वीर नहीं थी, पर सच्ची थी। "मुझे भेज देना," लियोपोल्ड ने कहा, "और मुझे हाइकिंग के बारे में और बताओ।"

Esra was already typing his number into her phone.

एसरा पहले से ही उसका नंबर अपने फ़ोन में डाल रही थी।
