The Knitting Circle

Conrad wants to make a scarf for his sister. Her birthday is in six weeks. He cannot knit. So on Tuesday he goes to the library. A sign on the wall says, "Knitting Circle, 3 p.m."

कॉनराड अपनी बहन के लिए एक मफ़लर बनाना चाहता है। उसका जन्मदिन छह हफ़्ते बाद है। उसे बुनना नहीं आता। इसलिए मंगलवार को वह लाइब्रेरी जाता है। दीवार पर लगे एक बोर्ड पर लिखा है, "बुनाई मंडली, दोपहर 3 बजे।"

He opens the door. Eight people sit in a circle with wool in their hands. They are all over seventy. Conrad is twenty-four. Everyone looks at him.

वह दरवाज़ा खोलता है। आठ लोग हाथों में ऊन लिए गोले में बैठे हैं। वे सब सत्तर से ऊपर के हैं। कॉनराड चौबीस साल का है। सब उसे देखने लगते हैं।

"Come in, dear," says a woman in a green sweater. "Sit here."

"आओ, बेटा," हरे स्वेटर वाली एक औरत कहती है। "यहाँ बैठ जाओ।"

Conrad takes the needles and starts. He drops a stitch. Then he drops another. His first row has holes like a fishing net.

कॉनराड सलाइयाँ लेकर शुरू करता है। उसका एक फंदा छूट जाता है। फिर एक और छूट जाता है। उसकी पहली क़तार में मछली पकड़ने के जाल जैसे छेद हो जाते हैं।

A man next to him laughs, but in a kind way. "You hold the needles too hard," he says. "Hold them softly."

उसके बग़ल में बैठा एक आदमी हँसता है, लेकिन प्यार से। "तुम सलाइयाँ बहुत कसकर पकड़ते हो," वह कहता है। "इन्हें हल्के से पकड़ो।"

The woman in green shows him how to fix a dropped stitch. Another woman brings him tea. In one hour, the woman in green makes half a sock. Conrad makes one row.

हरे स्वेटर वाली औरत उसे छूटा हुआ फंदा ठीक करना सिखाती है। एक और औरत उसके लिए चाय ले आती है। एक घंटे में हरे स्वेटर वाली औरत आधा मोज़ा बना लेती है। कॉनराड एक क़तार बनाता है।

He comes every Tuesday. He is slow, but the group never stops helping. After four weeks, his scarf is as long as his arm.

वह हर मंगलवार आता है। वह धीमा है, लेकिन मंडली मदद करना कभी नहीं छोड़ती। चार हफ़्ते बाद उसका मफ़लर उसकी बाँह जितना लंबा हो जाता है।

Before the birthday, the woman in green gives him a small box. Inside are old wooden needles.

जन्मदिन से पहले हरे स्वेटर वाली औरत उसे एक छोटा डिब्बा देती है। उसके अंदर लकड़ी की पुरानी सलाइयाँ हैं।

"These are lucky," she says. "My mother gave them to me. I want you to have them."

"ये शुभ हैं," वह कहती है। "ये मुझे मेरी माँ ने दी थीं। मैं चाहती हूँ कि ये तुम्हारे पास रहें।"

"I can't take them," Conrad says.

"मैं इन्हें नहीं ले सकता," कॉनराड कहता है।

"Of course you can. I have six other pairs."

"क्यों नहीं ले सकते। मेरे पास छह जोड़ियाँ और हैं।"

Conrad laughs. He puts the needles in his bag and starts a new row.

कॉनराड हँस पड़ता है। वह सलाइयाँ अपने बैग में रख लेता है और एक नई क़तार शुरू करता है।
