The Interview That Wasn't Recorded

Jalen leans back in his chair and smiles at Wanda across the little table. For an hour, she has been telling him about forty years in her bakery on Mill Street. She has described the winter when the ovens broke. She has told him about the bride who came in for a cake at six in the morning.

जेलेन अपनी कुर्सी पर पीछे टिककर छोटी मेज़ के उस पार वांडा की ओर मुस्कुराता है। एक घंटे से वह उसे मिल स्ट्रीट पर अपनी बेकरी में चालीस साल के बारे में बता रही है। उसने उस सर्दी के बारे में बताया है जब तंदूर ख़राब हो गए थे। उसने उसे उस दुल्हन के बारे में बताया है जो सुबह छह बजे केक लेने आई थी।

"That's wonderful," Jalen says. "I think that's everything I need. Thank you so much for your time."

"यह बहुत बढ़िया है," जेलेन कहता है। "मुझे लगता है कि मुझे जो चाहिए था, वह सब मिल गया। आपके समय के लिए बहुत-बहुत शुक्रिया।"

He reaches for his recorder to switch it off. The red light is not on. He presses the button, then presses it again. The screen says, Ready to record. Jalen's stomach drops. In sixty minutes, he has not recorded a single word.

He thinks about pretending that everything is fine. He could write down what he remembers and say the quotes are from memory. But the real stories would be gone, and Wanda deserves better. He takes a deep breath.

वह सोचता है कि दिखावा कर ले कि सब ठीक है। वह जो याद है उसे लिख सकता है और कह सकता है कि उद्धरण याददाश्त से हैं। पर असली कहानियाँ चली जाएँगी, और वांडा इससे बेहतर की हक़दार है। वह गहरी साँस लेता है।

"Wanda, I have to tell you something embarrassing. I forgot to press record. Nothing was saved."

"वांडा जी, मुझे आपको कुछ शर्मनाक बताना है। मैं रिकॉर्ड दबाना भूल गया। कुछ भी सेव नहीं हुआ।"

Her eyebrows rise, and for a second he is sure she will be angry. Instead, she laughs, a big, warm laugh that fills the room. "Oh, dear. Thirty years ago I did the same thing with a camera. Half of my daughter's first birthday was a picture of the floor."

"I'm so sorry," Jalen says. "Would you be willing to do it again? I promise I'll check the light this time."

"मुझे बहुत अफ़सोस है," जेलेन कहता है। "क्या आप इसे दोबारा करने को तैयार होंगी? मैं वादा करता हूँ कि इस बार बत्ती देख लूँगा।"

"Of course. But I should warn you, I don't remember what I said before."

"बिल्कुल। पर मैं तुम्हें आगाह कर दूँ, मुझे याद नहीं कि मैंने पहले क्या कहा था।"

"That's fine. I will ask different questions."

"कोई बात नहीं। मैं अलग सवाल पूछूँगा।"

This time, the red light glows, and Jalen checks it twice. Because Wanda has no script to follow, she wanders into new territory. She tells him about the night the whole street lost power. That night, she says, she baked bread by candlelight for the neighbors. She tells him about the old man who came every morning for one roll and never once spoke.

इस बार लाल बत्ती जलती है, और जेलेन उसे दो बार जाँचता है। क्योंकि वांडा के पास पालन करने के लिए कोई स्क्रिप्ट नहीं है, वह नए इलाक़ों में निकल जाती है। वह उसे उस रात के बारे में बताती है जब पूरी गली की बिजली चली गई थी। उस रात, वह कहती है, उसने पड़ोसियों के लिए मोमबत्ती की रोशनी में रोटी बनाई थी। वह उसे उस बूढ़े आदमी के बारे में बताती है जो हर सुबह एक रोल लेने आता था और एक बार भी कुछ नहीं बोला।

When they finish, Jalen listens to the first minute of the recording just to be safe. Then he looks at her. "That was better than the first time."

"Then you should forget to record more often," Wanda says. She reaches for the last cookie on the plate.
