The Translation Earpiece

Delphine's company issues everyone a pair of translation earpieces this month. They're small devices that translate speech in real time during international calls. She's skeptical at first, but they've worked well enough in her first few meetings with the Berlin office.

डेल्फ़ीन की कंपनी इस महीने सभी को अनुवाद वाले इयरपीस की एक जोड़ी देती है। ये छोटे उपकरण हैं जो अंतरराष्ट्रीय कॉल के दौरान बोली गई बात का तुरंत अनुवाद करते हैं। पहले उसे इन पर शक है, पर बर्लिन ऑफ़िस के साथ अपनी पहली कुछ मीटिंगों में ये काफ़ी अच्छा चले हैं।

Today's call matters more than usual. Delphine is presenting a proposal to a new client in Seoul. The earpiece is supposed to translate her English into Korean instantly. It's supposed to work so smoothly that the client won't even notice the gap.

आज की कॉल आम दिनों से ज़्यादा अहम है। डेल्फ़ीन सियोल के एक नए क्लाइंट को प्रस्ताव पेश कर रही है। इयरपीस को उसकी अंग्रेज़ी का कोरियाई में तुरंत अनुवाद करना है। इसे इतनी सहजता से चलना चाहिए कि क्लाइंट को बीच का फ़ासला महसूस ही न हो।

Halfway through her presentation, she notices the client's expression shift, somewhere between confused and mildly offended. She keeps talking, assuming it's a connection issue, but the reaction only grows more obvious.

प्रेज़ेंटेशन के बीच में उसे क्लाइंट के चेहरे के भाव बदलते दिखते हैं, कुछ उलझन और हल्की नाराज़गी के बीच के। वह यह मानकर बोलती रहती है कि यह कनेक्शन की समस्या होगी, पर प्रतिक्रिया और भी साफ़ होती जाती है।

Afterward, her colleague Callum, who actually speaks some Korean, pulls her aside. "Do you know what the earpiece translated for you? When you said the pricing was 'flexible,' it translated that strangely. It came out closer to 'we don't really know what we're doing.'"

Delphine's stomach drops. "That's… not remotely what I meant."

डेल्फ़ीन का दिल बैठ जाता है। "यह तो… मेरा मतलब बिल्कुल भी यह नहीं था।"

"I know. And when you said you'd 'circle back' on the timeline, it translated that literally. It came out like you meant driving in an actual circle. The client looked genuinely confused for a solid ten seconds."

"मुझे पता है। और जब तुमने कहा कि तुम टाइमलाइन पर 'वापस घूमकर आओगी,' तो उसने उसका शब्दशः अनुवाद कर दिया। वह ऐसे निकला जैसे तुम सचमुच गोल-गोल गाड़ी चलाने की बात कर रही हो। क्लाइंट पूरे दस सेकंड तक सचमुच उलझन में दिखा।"

"Why didn't it just translate normally?" Delphine asks, already dreading the answer.

"उसने सीधा-सादा अनुवाद क्यों नहीं किया?" डेल्फ़ीन पूछती है, जवाब से पहले ही डरते हुए।

"Office idioms don't always survive translation," Callum says. "The system tries its best. But if you speak in plain, direct sentences, it works a lot better. It's worse when you use expressions like that."

"दफ़्तर के मुहावरे अनुवाद में हमेशा बच नहीं पाते," कैलम कहता है। "सिस्टम अपनी पूरी कोशिश करता है। पर अगर तुम सादे, सीधे वाक्यों में बोलो, तो वह कहीं बेहतर काम करता है। ऐसे मुहावरे इस्तेमाल करने पर हालत और बिगड़ती है।"

Delphine spends the next hour rewriting her key phrases into simpler language, cutting every idiom she can find. "Flexible" becomes "we can change the price if needed." "Circle back" becomes "contact you again next week."

डेल्फ़ीन अगला पूरा घंटा अपने ख़ास वाक्यांशों को सरल भाषा में दोबारा लिखने में बिताती है, जो भी मुहावरा मिलता है उसे काटते हुए। "लचीली" बन जाता है "ज़रूरत पड़ने पर हम क़ीमत बदल सकते हैं।" "वापस घूमकर आना" बन जाता है "अगले हफ़्ते आपसे फिर संपर्क करना।"

She emails the client an apology, along with a short, clearly worded summary of the actual proposal. Within an hour, the client replies, relieved, saying the numbers actually sound reasonable once they're explained clearly.

वह क्लाइंट को माफ़ी का ईमेल भेजती है, साथ में असली प्रस्ताव का एक छोटा, साफ़ शब्दों वाला सार। एक घंटे के भीतर क्लाइंट राहत भरा जवाब देता है, यह कहते हुए कि साफ़ तरीक़े से समझाए जाने पर आँकड़े असल में वाजिब लगते हैं।

"Note to self," Delphine tells Callum the next morning. "If a machine is translating my words, my words need to stop being clever."

"Welcome to international business," Callum says, grinning. "The robots have officially humbled you."
