Aaliyah sits in the driver's seat of her father's old car. Her father, Farid, sits beside her with his seatbelt on.
आलिया अपने पिता की पुरानी कार की ड्राइवर सीट पर बैठी है। उसके पिता फ़रीद सीट-बेल्ट लगाकर उसके बगल में बैठे हैं।
They are in the empty parking lot behind the old stadium. It is Sunday morning, and no other cars are around.
वे पुराने स्टेडियम के पीछे की ख़ाली पार्किंग में हैं। रविवार की सुबह है, और आसपास कोई और गाड़ी नहीं है।
"This car has a manual gearbox," Farid says. "It's different from the one at your driving school."
"इस कार में मैन्युअल गियरबॉक्स है," फ़रीद कहते हैं। "यह तुम्हारे ड्राइविंग स्कूल वाली कार से अलग है।"
Aaliyah looks at the three pedals near her feet. "Which one is the clutch again?"

"The one on the left," Farid says. "Push it down all the way before you start the engine."
"बाईं तरफ़ वाला," फ़रीद कहते हैं। "इंजन चालू करने से पहले उसे पूरा दबाओ।"
Aaliyah pushes the clutch and turns the key. The engine starts with a low rumble.
आलिया क्लच दबाती है और चाबी घुमाती है। इंजन धीमी गड़गड़ाहट के साथ चालू हो जाता है।
"Now slowly lift your left foot," Farid says. "Push the gas a little too."
"अब अपना बायाँ पैर धीरे-धीरे उठाओ," फ़रीद कहते हैं। "साथ में थोड़ा एक्सीलरेटर भी दबाओ।"
Aaliyah lifts her foot too fast. The car jumps forward once, then stops completely.
आलिया अपना पैर बहुत जल्दी उठा देती है। कार एक बार आगे उछलती है, फिर पूरी तरह बंद हो जाती है।
"Sorry," Aaliyah says, her cheeks turning red.
"माफ़ कीजिए," आलिया कहती है, उसके गाल लाल हो जाते हैं।
"That's normal," Farid says. "Everyone stalls the car at first. Try again."
"यह सामान्य है," फ़रीद कहते हैं। "शुरू में सबकी कार बंद हो जाती है। फिर कोशिश करो।"
Aaliyah starts the engine again and tries. The car jumps and stalls a second time, then a third.

She sits back in her seat and breathes out slowly.

"Maybe I'm not good at this," she says quietly.

"You just started five minutes ago," Farid says. "Give it a few more tries."

Aaliyah starts the car again. This time, she lifts her foot slowly and evenly. The car rolls forward, smooth and steady.
आलिया कार फिर चालू करती है। इस बार वह अपना पैर धीरे-धीरे और एक-सी गति से उठाती है। कार आगे बढ़ती है, सहज और स्थिर।
"I did it!" she says, gripping the wheel tightly.

Farid smiles. "Let's try that again. Then we'll drive around the whole lot."
फ़रीद मुस्कुराते हैं। "चलो इसे फिर से करते हैं। फिर हम पूरी पार्किंग का चक्कर लगाएँगे।"
