Aaliyah sits in the driver's seat of her father's old car. Her father, Farid, sits beside her with his seatbelt on.
阿莉娅坐在爸爸那辆旧车的驾驶座上。她爸爸法里德系着安全带，坐在她旁边。
They are in the empty parking lot behind the old stadium. It is Sunday morning, and no other cars are around.
他们在旧体育场后面的空停车场里。现在是星期天早上，周围没有别的车。
"This car has a manual gearbox," Farid says. "It's different from the one at your driving school."
“这辆车是手动挡的，”法里德说，“和你驾校的那辆不一样。”
Aaliyah looks at the three pedals near her feet. "Which one is the clutch again?"
阿莉娅看着脚边的三个踏板。“离合器是哪一个来着？”
"The one on the left," Farid says. "Push it down all the way before you start the engine."
“左边那个，”法里德说，“发动引擎之前，要把它一脚踩到底。”
Aaliyah pushes the clutch and turns the key. The engine starts with a low rumble.
阿莉娅踩下离合器，转动钥匙。引擎低沉地轰鸣起来。
"Now slowly lift your left foot," Farid says. "Push the gas a little too."
“现在慢慢抬起左脚，”法里德说，“同时轻轻踩一点油门。”
Aaliyah lifts her foot too fast. The car jumps forward once, then stops completely.
阿莉娅把脚抬得太快了。车向前蹿了一下，然后完全熄火了。
"Sorry," Aaliyah says, her cheeks turning red.
“对不起，”阿莉娅说，脸红了起来。
"That's normal," Farid says. "Everyone stalls the car at first. Try again."
“这很正常，”法里德说，“谁刚开始都会熄火。再试一次。”
Aaliyah starts the engine again and tries. The car jumps and stalls a second time, then a third.
阿莉娅又发动了引擎，再试一次。车蹿了一下，又熄火了，第二次，然后是第三次。
She sits back in her seat and breathes out slowly.
她靠回座椅上，缓缓地呼出一口气。
"Maybe I'm not good at this," she says quietly.
“也许我不擅长这个，”她轻声说。
"You just started five minutes ago," Farid says. "Give it a few more tries."
“你才刚开始五分钟，”法里德说，“再多试几次吧。”
Aaliyah starts the car again. This time, she lifts her foot slowly and evenly. The car rolls forward, smooth and steady.
阿莉娅再次发动汽车。这一次，她把脚抬得又慢又均匀。车平稳顺畅地向前滑去。
"I did it!" she says, gripping the wheel tightly.
“我成功了！”她说，双手紧紧握着方向盘。
Farid smiles. "Let's try that again. Then we'll drive around the whole lot."
法里德笑了。“我们再来一次。然后绕着整个停车场开一圈。”
