Every morning at seven, Calum heard singing. It was a soft, high voice. It sang the same song again and again.
Todas las mañanas a las siete, Calum oía cantar. Era una voz suave y aguda. Cantaba la misma canción una y otra vez.
He lived on the third floor of an old building. At first, he thought it was the radio. But the voice often stopped. Then it started the same song again.
Vivía en el tercer piso de un edificio viejo. Al principio pensó que era la radio. Pero la voz se detenía a menudo. Luego empezaba otra vez la misma canción.
On Monday, he left his apartment early. He stood in the hallway and listened. The sound came from above. He went up the stairs to the fourth floor.
El lunes salió temprano de su apartamento. Se quedó en el pasillo y escuchó. El sonido venía de arriba. Subió las escaleras hasta el cuarto piso.
The singing was louder at the door of number 42. Calum did not knock. He felt shy and went to work.
El canto se oía más fuerte en la puerta del número 42. Calum no llamó. Sintió vergüenza y se fue al trabajo.
On Tuesday, he came back. This time he knocked.
El martes volvió. Esta vez llamó a la puerta.
An old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a warm, blue sweater.
Una anciana abrió. Tenía el pelo blanco y un suéter azul, abrigador.
"Oh!" she said. "Is my singing too loud?"
«¡Ay!», dijo. «¿Mi canto es demasiado fuerte?»
"No, no," Calum said. "I only want to know who sings."
«No, no», dijo Calum. «Solo quiero saber quién canta.»
She laughed. "I sing in a choir. We have a concert on Sunday. I practice every morning at seven."
Ella se rió. «Canto en un coro. Tenemos un concierto el domingo. Ensayo todas las mañanas a las siete.»
"It is a lovely song," he said.
«Es una canción preciosa», dijo él.
"Thank you. Come to the concert," she said. "Sit in front, and I will sing for you."
«Gracias. Venga al concierto», dijo ella. «Siéntese adelante y cantaré para usted.»
